Crime and Punishment Arc all the way.
Can't wait until I can steal things, without everyone in the civilization not talking to me.

ELF FOREST RETREAT
Yes, elves for the elf people -- but thinking more general, as we list all these racial civilizations, we should think in broad terms and use the civilization definitions to allow any type of civilization to be played. Elves will provide some necessary extra elements for this process. Mixing the cliff dwelling, wilderness dwelling, town building, ethics/sphere-aligned/religious tendencies into a robust interface for civilization building is a long-term goal.
I wonder how that will affect the community, as elves will go from 'those annoying guys that are meant to ask you to stop killing trees, but lack the noble to do so' into 'playable race'.

Also.

I assume that a great silence shall arise, as a portion of the player base will play it for the novelty, but never admit that they ever did anything as undwarvenly as not play as dwarves, and play as, of all things, ELVES while they were at it.

That is, unless someone went and somehow Cacame'd the whole race.

It will really need something like the magic arc to make it interesting, though.  If elves don't have something really cool that dwarves don't have, then you're just playing as dwarves with no digging, no metal, no cool engineering, and very restrictive ethics that don't even let you kill most of the animals in the region.

I guess in a sense, playing as the zerg rush race with nothing but wooden equipment, no traps, and no ability to build serious defensive fortifications besides maybe tree forts will get pretty !!Fun!! when seiges roll in, though, so I guess some people might enjoy the challenge and the joy of the sheer cheapness of life.

I'm more looking forward to playing the goblins, personally. That, and the procedurally-generated fantasy races that will eventually be added in. Vanilla playable underwater lobsterman civ. Oh yeah.

I imagine everyone will play it for the novelty right when it comes out, and then most people, being short sturdy creatures fond of drink and industry, will go back to dwarves. I'm sure there will be a few people coming into the community that play elves or humans, and more than a few playing goblins or boldlings, and of course quite a few that switch between races. Dwarf people will be same as always, elf people will be a barbaric and superficial lot, Goblin people will be dark and edgy teenagers, and the kobolds will be played by the greatest neckbeards, driven to help the small and weak beings to accomplish great and mighty works, in spite of a world filled with great danger.
Little will change, except that the factionalist jokes (thus far only in favor of dwarves and against elves) will become more diverse.

And I for one welcome our newly found jokes with racist undertones.

Many years from now some may question why the game is called Dwarf Fortress, seeing as how that's just one option within one of three game modes. Then we will have yet another opportunity to act like pompous elitists.

We have so many jokes about how dwarvs hate elves, but just wait untill we start getting jokes about how kobalds hate humans. They are only that tall because they are compensating for where it counts, and such.

Yes but DF is only 'DF' because the original game of Dwarf Fortress intersected with Armok.  The game became Armok II:  Dwarf Fortress.   Eventually Dwarves will be one of many things to do.   Note how the majority of power goals apply to a more adventure-oriented scope.

Reguardless, the transition into Slaves to Armok II has already been made. So something along the lines of

The transition to Slaves to Armok II is gonna be a tumultuous one.

seems rather misleading.

You should read the post I was replying to originally, regarding how the game won't necessarily be called Dwarf Fortress in the future.  People still call the game Dwarf Fortress, regardless of its official title.  This is something I've discussed with Toady on the podcast, I'm certain.

Edit:  Just checked the transcripts and it doesn't seem to have made it into the final cuts.  If I recall right, the theoretical changeover is a delicate subject in part because the name Dwarf Fortress has developed a lot of clout.

A delicate subject that should be brought up next podcast. ;)
