Maybe I'm naive but I doubt you're going to be repeatedly fighting off packs of muggers.
I don't know, at his level the random encounters might be bikers instead, but it's sort of on the edge.

For my actual response, I might suggest that you reconsider this hike of yours. Walking from the east coast to the west coast of the United States is the roughly the same distance as circumnavigating Earth's moon. That is a lot of walking. Since you're in Flordia, I would suggest walking across your state before trying to do the same on a national level. You should also consider if you really want to do this. Outside of towns and cities, there is still a good deal of nothing you'll have to walk through. It might get very boring.

That sounds like fun! Let's do that instead.

Really, I'd look it up.  There must be plenty of people who've done this, and if you can talk to them about their recommendations that would be very helpful.

It's not like people never do this kind of thing, and I'm pretty sure many who do promote it as a great experience.  I'm not sure why there are people trying to discourage.  One of my favorite professors graduated college in Japan, and immediately backpacked from there to France in the 70's.

If you're a reasonably hardy and intelligent person and can make the arrangements, I see no reason not to do this.  Yes, there are risks, but that can be said for any great life experience worth pursuing.

I do enjoy long walks, though the longest I've taken myself only lasted four days. That was without purchasing anything though or making stops, so you could probably do with carrying less food than I did. You also probably won't need to bring a guitar, but I don't go anywhere without my guitar. I'm lucky a sixty pound pack doesn't slow me down much. :P

A few things to keep in mind -

Consider backpacking in general instead of walking. There are some places and times when you'll really want to hitch a ride. Don't be afraid to use public transport when in a city to get get around.

I'd recommend at least a light sleeping bag or blanket and tent rather than a generic tarp. There will be stretches where you'll be sleeping outside.

For backpack, go with a high quality large military-style backpack, with a frame and bits for attaching things.

When traveling through the countryside, don't be afraid to ask people if you can pitch camp in their fields or property. It's a lot better than being caught trespassing, and sometimes they'll invite you to have dinner with them.

Carry plenty of water on you, especially in the SW. Get some better advice from someone else about hiking in the desert. :P

Budget for at least one new pair of shoes over the course of the trip. You WILL most likely destroy yours earlier in the trip than you expect.

Bring a compass and a manual recharge flashlight. I prefer the crank ones.

If you plan on going into the wilderness, consider boosting your phone or getting an emergency radio. It's not light, but it could save your life. Better yet, stick to the roads and map out your route in advance so you don't have to worry about it.

I don't go anywhere without some rope, a good knife, my folding shovel/pick, my travel cooker and a small pan, but you probably don't need these as much if you're sticking to civilized areas.

I'm not sure what you need the satchel/hip bag for?

Unfortunately, except for sleeping outside, finding a place to stay is going to be a problem. I've spent most of my time hiking in places where you can spend seven dollars for a bed for the night, but there aren't a whole lot of places in the US that are like that. Look for youth hostels if you can - I've seen beds for as cheap as 14 a night in the US. But don't expect to find them. Even staying at the cheapest motel is limited due to the fact you have to walk to it, so I'd budget at least 30 dollars a night for accommodation.

And I'll join the chorus of doing a still long but also much shorter walk first. A week or even a two week walk will provide you with a much better understanding of exactly what this means, and help you prepare better.

How could I forget a compass? I must not be thinking straight...

The suggestion of walking from coast to coast just in Florida is a great idea, which I think was actually the inspiration for this idea in the first place. I think I'll try planning for that next time we have a long break, and maybe next weekend I have off I could try a shorter 5-hour walk or even a two-day backpacking trip, so I know just what I'm suggesting with this.

Also, I don't wince at the thought of sleeping in a tent or sleeping bag, or even just a generic tarp. Though that may be because I've never done it before.

Also also, I intend to stick to the roads on this trip, if only so it's harder to get lost.

I suppose I don't really need help with planning the shorter trips, and after browsing another website I found it seems I should expect to go a bit less then 20 miles a day on average. Oh, and it's going to be a bitch trying to convince my mom to let me go farther then 3 miles away from the house or school without a car.

Make sure you test your gear under at least as stressful conditions as they're going to be in before you have to rely on said gear. Make sure your pack is comfortable to carry over the course of several hours of constant walking. Be sure to carry at least one liter of water with you at all times. I second the "Use public transportation if available" thing. You might want to add toilet paper back to your carry list since it's light and you can't always count on there being any when you need it. If at all possible be looking for things before you need them.

I don't have much information to offer, but i do suggest trying a smaller hike first, such as the Appalachian trail.

I've read about this a little, watched a documentary, and it seems like a nice trail to start with, get information, ect.

This is incredibly ambitious. Why not try something more along the lines of walking to Dragon*Con first. If you can do that and back you at least got some staying power, if not the survival skills. And if not you can phone someone and go home without too many hours on the road.

Just watch out for Argentinian women luring you away from your career.  I hear if you follow it long enough, you'll end up in Patagonia.

There have been plenty of people who have bicycled across the country, so it's not that big a stretch.  As people have said, the only thing I'd be worried about is getting caught on those long long highways in the midwest and desert, with no place for miles to buy food or sleep or even get out of the sun.
