I'm planning to take a walk from Orlando, Florida to the West Coast (probably San Francisco) sometime in my future, probably a few years. I'm trying to think up a plan for the trip, and make sure I'm well prepared for it before I embark. I have a map
here, which anyone can
contribute to, for planning the exact route I'll take.
As for how long this will take, according to Google maps the trip will be around 2860 miles. I figure that I should be able to walk 20 miles in a day (10 hours of walking at 2 mph, with 14 hours of rest) without too much trouble, which means that it'll take at least 143.5 days to complete. I will probably stop at more then a few places along the way, however, and one should always assume delays. Thus, I will make a generous estimation of 200 days from start to finish for the trip. If the route distance changes significantly between now and when I start, I'll change this estimation accordingly.
Also, I should make a budget for food and supplies I'll get along the way, as well as an inventory checklist of things I should have before I go.
Budget (assuming a 200-day trip):
Food - $3500 (This is $17.5 per day)
Water - $600 (I should be able to get this for free most of the time, but I'll budget $3 a day for it just in case)
Hotels - I have no idea how much your typical hotel charges per night, though I'd like to make hotels a luxury instead of a norm to save here. Help in determining how much I should budget for this would be wonderful
Toiletries - $250
Spending Money - $2500
Emergency - $1000
Cell phone bill - No idea how much this will be (I've only have a cell phone for around 1 month in my life).
Total - $7850 so far
