I feel obligated to plug my flatmate. He relies on sales of his music to pay the rent (and he gets just barely enough at the moment to afford his half of our windowless, unheated basement apartment), so if you like it, please consider buying a track or two on beatport.com - they're really cheap and it's a huge help for us both. (You can also listen to samples of many more songs on beatport.) I recommend using headphones to listen, as most speakers lose a lot of the sound.

Ricky Ryan - The Pitfall (Roman Rai Remix)
On the Skyscraper

You wouldn't believe how amazing it is to hear him composing this stuff out of nothing.

I regret that this is the only convenient link I could find, but here is an incredible IDM gem I found a couple years ago while downloading stuff at random.  While searching for a better link, I found this group has finally released another album!  Squeee!

European folk/folk metal:

Gaelic Storm, humorous folk music, usually involving large quantities of powerful alcohol

Ensiferum:

And of course, no music thread is complete without some Eluveitie.

And no music thread on Bay12 is complete without at least a mention of Korpiklaani's dwarf song:

Now for less genre specific, more nerdy musics!

Zeusaphones; not so much a genre as music with its awesome-o-meter cranked up to over the top level.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ep1r0unWkYc

Zelda music on string quartet

Warcraft Medley

Ah yes, the northern people and their awesome music, their live performances have evaded me for far too long.
Speaking of which, Ensiferum:
Lai Lai Hei

Vandaren (a cover, but a very good one)

Tale of revenge (this is how a ballad is done :P )

Sword Chant

Stone cold metal (BANJO FUCK YEAH!)

OH hey, seems google knows all. Just by watching ensiferum on youtube, an alert thing popped up informing me of a local Ensiferum/Finntroll concert within the month.  8)

i find annoying how popular and pervasive metal has become. i used to enjoy thrash metal, and still carry a few songs around in my mp3 (pantera and suicidal tendencies), but it has become impossible to discuss music on the internet without preemptively forbidding metal and the cores... not having anything against the genres, it effectively drowns alternative music much like mainstream music does to the rest

with that said, i express my happiness on seeing nick cave mentioned on the first reply, he's easily the musician i respect the most, currently, and second africa's recommendation

it hurts me a bit, though, that nobody paid homage to lux interior, who sadly passed away in feb 4, 2009...

Can I assume you know about that song through Halo? Because realy? I mean realy? Next thing you'll be linking us to somebody playing Call of duty to the tune of 'The Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil'! It sort of reminds me of this little ditty.

But let's get something else in. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Stay Alive.

I'd fucking play COD to Sympathy for the Devil. There's something wrong with that?

Let's go on a trip trough my evening:
Started with Yiruma, awesome piano skills, then went to Pachelbel and his sweet Canon in D, after that i felt bagpipey so i put on a compilation of several pieces, then i remembered Braveheart and after that it was pretty clear i would end up with Waylander and their song that got me hooked on Irish folk metal :)

Fun fact: The movie with the greatest sound track of all time ever goes to 'Digimon: The movie'. Let's get a quick sample from that, with 'The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - The Impression That I Get'

On that note, I've just replayed an in-game 'live' performance by Blind Guardian for the third time.
