Author Topic: Is it possible to create a cleaning system for a room using screw pumps?  (Read 669 times)

I am pondering the creation of a sort of bath house for my latest fortress, studded with rather wonderful looking wells and water filled channels and such. I recall the invention of a fellow who; in order to get his injured dwarf out of bed, poured water onto him repeatedly using screw pumps until his swimming abilities had been raised.

Although my understanding of screw pumps is extremely limited, would it therefore be possible to place many screw pumps underneath the room that could fire water upwards and over the area, then drain through grates in the floor and resume their original positions? Preferably at the pull of a lever. It doesn't need to be automated you see.

It would be possible. Build a citern beneath the room, then build the pumpstacks beside it. Fill the citern wil water, build grates and maybe floodgates, and voila.
Alternatively, build a floor hatch and fill the room to 4/7, then empty it by opening the hatch when you're done. Which I think would be better since it wouldn't waste the time of your screw operators.

That is good, thank you very much sir. I do like the idea of the floor hatch method. It reminds me of a plug hole in a bath.

Although, I must ask: is it possible to link the majority of these pumps to one lever so that the water would fire upwards in all areas when it is pulled, rather than having multiple pump operators at once? Would that not cause a few problems due to the "on and off" settings that levers currently have?

Well the pumps don't actually fire the water per se.
Also you can link the pumps together, no prob. Don't know if  a single dwarf can ahndle this though, so maybe you'll want to biuld a dwarfen power station that also pumps the water into the room. THen you'd also need a flood gate that kees the water back when not in use.

I think I'll have to draw a diagram for this.

That might be a good idea. Running water might be a bit of a problem though, given that the river is frozen solid, so it might have to be wind if I need to set up a power station. I get my water by melting murky pools with magma you see, and soon by extracting it from the caverns below.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Green is the pump, the Ws are the water wheels, red line is a floodgate, red square a floor hatch. Grey and black  are Floor, holes and walls, blue is obviously water.

Thank you sir. That looks wonderfully efficient. You've been a great help, I'll save that diagram and get to work.

On second though, that design is crap. The Pump stac should be a level higher than the room, else the water'll keep flowing out.

So it would be wise for the water to flow through the ceilling/from above?

Using water reactors, and screw pumps in general, can be found here.

A pump stack can be modified to make a tower reactor, which is more efficient. Look for it here

Yeah, that's where I got the basic design from.
