Compendium of ranged-attack bugs
« on: January 29, 2008, 09:10:00 pm »

I wanted to collect together a list of verified ranged-attack issues, whether or not they have workarounds.  The hope is to make it easier for Toady to decide which of these will be fun to fix, and for us to know which of these bugs already are on his list.

My list, roughly in order of level of nuisance:
- a quiver can only hold a stack (as small as one bolt) rather than a fixed number of possibly different bolts
- a marksdwarf with an empty quiver will rush the enemy rather than retreat for more bolts
- ballista operators fire without regard to who they're about to kill (the Dick Cheney problem), even during training
- even dabbling marksdwarves are perfect at missing friendlies
- training marksdwarves who crouch during training don't get up until they're done training [Req 321, Req571]
- dwarves clean up ranges during target practice
- marksdwarves fire too fast (the machinecrossbow problem)

I will add verifiable bugs of similar nature to this post (with attribution) if you reply.  Or you can use the comments to shoot the breeze and see if it works.

Asehujiko:
- koblin ambushers fire even more too fast -- they can put a third of their quiver in flight

Most of these are not bugs, but missing features.  I can see these all being stuck in somewhere in the Combat Arc.

-Kobolds ambushers sometimes gain extreme firing speed, firing another arrow in the time it takes the previous one to move 2 tiles, resulting in them having 4-5 arrows in the air constantly when firing at a target 10 tiles away. That's about 10 times faster then the repeating crossbows the other races use.

A commonly-disliked misfeature is a bug in my world.  None of these are game-killing (in fact, empirically it is quite clear that *no bug* is game-killing for me, except perhaps that the game does not halt time and thus I occasionally need to stop playing), but the game would be better without them.

Not sure what "stuck in the Combat Arc" means.  After trolling through the dev pages, I noted down which items have numbers, so anything else is not tracked on the dev pages (that I could find).  I have no direct access to Toady's neurons or bits of paper, of course.

I've had another interesting one, a marksdwarf training with a stack of bone bolts in his quiver, one hauled and one in his right hand. Needless to say, it was quite a while before he ran out of bolts.

I've never seen a kobold ambusher; is that an adventure-mode-only thing?  In any case, can someone else confirm?

Let kobolds steal your crap in fortress and you will see an ambush.  Out of curiosity I did.  There where DEFINITELY too many arrows spewing out of them.  5 dead dwarves in about 2 seconds, then they left before my military could get there.

That seems like a positive, actually.  Although I hope he didn't crouch during that time  :)
