new laptop, list of vital games?
« on: January 28, 2011, 11:25:12 pm »

I'm getting a new laptop tomorrow. Lets make a list of all the essential free games that I MUST have.

Besides DF, of course.

Unangband is a fun game.

It kind of is.

Spelunky, Survival Crisis Z, Cave Story, Art of Theft (it's made by that Zero Punctuation guy right?), Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup.

I think you should look around for games with very low system specs. Computers of the past used to have much lower system specs, but nobody sells those old games anymore. Many great ones are no longer commercially available. If, for example, you wanted to play a Super Nintendo game it would be quite impossible unless you found the game cartridge and a working console. You could try a pawn shop ... similarly, there were a lot of fun computer games like Eye of the Beholder, System Shock, and Ultima Underworld. Sadly, while you could totally play those on your laptop with DOSBox, you would still need to buy the software somewhere.

I suggest trying to find bargain software in discount stores. I found Fallout 1 and 2 bundled together for $9 one time, and Starfleet Command Gold for $14. You could probably find Neverwinter Nights 1 Diamond for about the same. All of those were worth the price I paid.

Steam sometimes has amazing sales, but you have to deal with the fact that it's Steam.

civilization 4

disable random events and goodie huts and play in MP with  a map script that generates perfectly balanced maps so you can play like the pros.

MechWarrior 4, download MekTek's free thing. It's pretty cool.
I would suggest MechWarrior Living Legends, but your computer might die on anything above "Low" settings.

Some variant of Angband, if you already don't have one.
