Invisible aquifier.
« on: January 29, 2008, 08:49:00 pm »

I started to build my fort, confident in the lack of aquifier. (I didn't even get an alert message.) The position I was in had a stream, and I was building close to it, but not even directly under it.

After two layers, I dug into the black sand to get a 'damp stone' message. Disregarding the whole 'sand is stone?' thing, I'd dug into an aquifier that supposedly didn't exist.

On the embarkment screen its possible to choose an area with multiple biomes. I noticed that if one of the biomes has an aquifer and the other does not, it sometimes forgoes the aquifer warning message.

Alright, let's say that happened. However, I extensively checked to see if there was any aquifiers beforehand.

You sure you didn't miss one of the biomes? Try digging in each corner of the map.

I had the same thing happen to me THREE FORTS IN A ROW! All of them had multiple biomes, but for all of them no biome listed aquifer. Just to be perfectly clear, no biome, in any of the three starting locations of these forts, listed aquifer, but all three had it.

This is, of course, a pretty big irritation: While it is possible to deal with an aquifer area you have to know from the beginning that you're going to hit it so you can plan accordingly.

Also, as an aside, I'd personally like it if there was a way to build "piles" i.e. walls historically made of logs driven into the ground of a water filled area so that the water can be pumped out and a more permanent, water-tight structure put in its place (I envision wooden walls you can build, and remove, in a flooded area from above). It would make this sort of situation recoverable.

I had this happen once, I'm about 80% sure it was not listed on any of the biomes (I double checked because I was looking for an aquifer free map specifically).

It was around a lake or ocean (forget which) - so maybe it's a feature of large bodies of water that they sometimes have invisible aquifers?

I've just recently hit the same issue. The map I was on had a stream running through it, but nothing on the embark screen hinted at an aquifer. Luckily, I started digging in a nearby mountainous patch, and had enough wit to recheck the outline of the watersource when my miner encountered damp walls.

Do you have the seed and spot?  I don't think I've killed the seeds yet, but I can drag out the old copy if I have to.
