DwarfFort: OCD's Despair
« on: January 28, 2011, 06:24:07 pm »

I have OCD, and this game drives me INSANE.
One floor of bauxite in my Chalk Dining Room?
RARGHBLAGH
I still love it though, I have no clue why.

Chalk?  But doesn't that spread dust everywhere?  How ever will you keep it clean?

The worst is when you are carving out your great dining room and all of a sudden one corner clips into a soil layer.. Blahh.. Different rock types I've learned to accept as an inevitability but soil?!

At times like this I feel perfectly okay about using dfliquids to put some obsidian in.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Sometimes I dig my whole fort out on a soil layer then just tile the floors with stone blocks. Then I can just pick what colors I want. Can't engrave it that way of course.

If I feel like being OCD (no, really, I can choose that for myself!) I just dig every single square below z-2 and build everything UP the correct way.

I don't realy have what any docter would call OCD. I'm more then willing to let small inperfections go, but still, I like a perfectly planned out fort, or atleast used to. I think one of the skills that game helped with was accepting that sometimes thing's don't go as you planned.

The worst is digging down fairly deep on a shallow map and accidentally breaking in to the third cavern as you make your grand dining hall.  At least you can put windows on that side later, but still...

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

You think that's bad? I must have my entire fort made out of cast obsidian. Not constructed obsidian, cast obsidian. Mistake? FLOOD ENTIRE FORT WITH MAGMA AND START OVER. Need to expand? FLOOD ENTIRE FORT WITH MAGMA AND START OVER. Want to redesign? FLOOD ENT-

You get the idea.

edit: Urist McDumbass decides to throw a tantrum in your control room? FLOOD ENTIRE FORT WITH MAGMA AND START OVER.

You should, uh, look into a more modular design strategy.

... or electroshock therapy?

Personally, the only thing that I fixate on is getting 1 (ONE) decent dwarf to be my main noble. Very little red text (I don't mind red physical traits most of the time and I don't care about music or kinetics, etc), analytics & a slew of others must be green, they must have a decent personality (I like no empathy though) and they must have easily accommodated likes. I will look for hours and hours. I've decided it's the only dwarf that actually matters and all the rest are fodder which has made this game even more enjoyable. Although, I haven't been able to find a decent noble for my new fort  :'(
