Is there any way possible to make tree-proof plumbing?
« on: January 28, 2011, 05:45:56 pm »

Aside from simply making the tunnels wide enough that trees are unlikely to block them, is there any way?

Will trees grow on muddy paved roads?

How about cage traps?

Paved Roads will do it, yes.  I think if you construct a floor it will also work, but that gets expensive real fast.  For a cheaper alternative, you could build a line of paved road/floor, and let the rest get tree'd, but it would never tree up enough to clog that strip of paved.  Then, annual sewer cleaning, assuming that you can turn your water off, of course...

Alternatively, don't turn it off.  Have your nobles attempt to clean the gutters.  Some amount of loss is acceptable for proper sanitation, after all.

I just floor up my entire water system. Also, I'm extremely puzzled by people who find cheap stones difficult to come by.

The problem is, it isn't cheap stone.  It's the SAME stone.  Try and fine enough microcline blocks to pave your entire plumbing system!  DF players are notoriously perfectionist.

...why are you doing anything but atomsmashing your microcline? Although I suppose covering it with something blue is a good way to dispose of it.

Make your tunnels out of up stairs.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Because, being color-coded is OCD!  And it looks cool and clean, perfect for bathing pits or swimming pools!

I'm aware of that, and I'm susceptible to this tendency as well - when I'm building something out of diorite, I won't use jet even though they're the same colour/value/magma-safety. Still, unless you're in an area without much microcline, I've never had any trouble finding it. My current fort (fairly large and old) has 18,127 microcline just sitting around, which should be more than enough to floor over an entire new fort (and I've used plenty more in constructions).

Atomsmashing stone? BLASPHEMY! That stone is too useful.

Also, will smoothing the floor prevent trees growing on muddy stone? And if the floor is engraved as well, will the trees remove the engraving?

Trees won't grow on stockpiles. Set the entire plumbing system as a stockpile that accepts nothing.

Trees will grow thorough engraved floors. You'll even get an announcement if it was a masterwork engraving!

And if it was Urist McEngraver's only masterwork engraving, this will be followed with "Urist McEngraver has gone berserk!".
This will be followed by:
"Urist McEngraver punches the Dwarf Baby in the head with his right hand, jamming the skull through the brain, and tearing apart the brain!
Urist McBaby has been struck down.
Urist McMother cancels Attend Axe Demonstration: Throwing tantrum"
And so on.

This is why dwarves cut down trees. Wood production is just a side benefit.

That's rather ambitious, a 2 Z level aqueduct level.  Knowing me, I'd cause countless cave-ins while channeling from the upper to the lower.

Dig it out from the lower layer, using ramps.
