I'd have to dig out the entire upper layer, then into the second via channeling.  Cave-ins have never been kind on me.

I'm thinking of leaving my sewers natural, and let them tree up.  My system will be far and away wide enough to accommodate trees, since it's 3 wide hallways and 7x7 room sections, which fit directly over the next floor's wall pattern.  I'll likely still do an annual sewer-cleaning, of running through and cutting down trees and shrubs, re-smoothing floors, and perhaps get a little crazy and put statues up inside the sewers.

alternatively, I could simply flush the system with lava and scorch away all the trees.  That'll mean drawing up from the lava sea, but I need a quick method of noble and wounded disposal already.  Will lava remove blood from the walls?

No, ramps will work. Designate a 5x5 area to be ramped out, and you'll end up with 3x3 of floor and some up ramps on the bottom layer. On the top layer you'll have 3x3 of open space and some down ramps. Remove the ramps and you have a 5x5x2 room.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

The problem is, it isn't cheap stone.  It's the SAME stone.  Try and fine enough microcline blocks to pave your entire plumbing system!  DF players are notoriously perfectionist.
make a reaction to produce the SAME stones or copy the ones I used.

Yeah, but that's not vanilla.  Part of the Fun is realizing that you're 2 stone short of a full road!

As long as you have picks, you are never short on stone...

Unless you are going to tell me that you have mined out every single stone on the map  ???

No, but finding another vein of something specific can sometimes be a hassle.  Granted, I get most of my stone from emptying rooms, I don't go exploratory much.

??? You can channel two levels at a time, you realize... just designate the top level as "Channel" instead of "Dig".

Lava and fire don't burn trees, only loose items.

As an added bonus to channeling, trees won't grow on the ramp tiles. So provided having ramps in your plumbing doesn't annoy, you don't even need water in the top z-level.

Make your entire plumbing system out of mold-cast obsidian, then paved over using only obsidian blocks encrusted with clear glass.

The Dwarven way.

Okay, I know what you're talking about - I've mined out some frozen ocean floor just to get some glorious bauxite leftovers for a blood red some kind of walled structure with drawbridges acting as surface fort entrance. And even then I just had to use kaolinite for the drawbridges themselves and parts of the floor.

Still, microcline should be perfect for flooring over aqueducts, cisterns and building trade depots. It has a nice colour in Stonesense, too. It reminds me of when I've played RuneScape.

Oddly enough, all three games that I've played haven't had microcline.

On building Cisterns, I've found that if you have to put it in a region you've already dug out, you can channel out one row of tiles at a time on each layer, so the dwarfs don't drop the roof through the lower layers.  Alternatively, you could try and provoke the roof dropping in order to punch multiple holes, but be sure to get the corners first.  After that, I'll start building walls from the bottom floor up, along with an interior stairway for retrieving dwarves that fall in.

That's what I did on my last fort, when the first Cistern Project got captured by Goblins, and I had to build an alternate through my workshop floor.  It wasn't pretty but it seemed to work.  Didn't get to do much with it though, since that fort suffered SUFoDS around the time I completed it.

That's rather ambitious, a 2 Z level aqueduct level.  Knowing me, I'd cause countless cave-ins while channeling from the upper to the lower.
Designate the top Z with ramps.  They'll dig both Z's safely :3

Maybe I'm old-school but I prefer cobaltite blocks for areas that involve water.  Either that or kimberlite, but not microcline.  I also build magma pump stacks with bauxite or kaolinite blocks when I have them, but never cinnabar, it's too bright.
