Channels - Did the ground collapse?
« on: November 06, 2007, 05:19:00 pm »

So, I was digging a channel from the river towards a grate. I was hoping the water would pour through and irrigate my indoor farm floor. However, as I dug the channel, the dwarves went right through the ground. So upon reaching the river they were suddenly trapped and drowned in a tight tunnel. My first death's, so very sad.

Anyway, I think i was on a map with alot of clay. Was the ground to loose? Or is it just a beetlebug?

Channels dig out both the top tile and the tile below it.

A "channel" is just a hole in the ground. It basically just removes the floor. Unfortunately, miners are not very smart about digging themselves into a hole (or digging other people into holes, for that matter). It's probably best to dig some stairs and mine your "channel" from the same level, so your dwarves don't fall and they can get back out.

The problem of dwarves dropping into a channel while mining will normally only occur when more than one dwarf is digging channels. Since they don't take account of where the OTHER dwarf is standing while they're digging it, they will often dig out the tile he's standing on while he's doing his job. What I normally do is dig channel to one square of whatever i'm trying to connect it to, and then designate that one square when i'm ready and everyone is out of the channel. This way only one dwarf will come to do it, and he will not fall in.

Aha, I see. Well of course it had to be more complicated.

What I usually do is designate channels like this:
code:

# - Floor
_ - Channel
#######
#_#_#_#
#######
Then after those are mined I simply designate the rest
#######
_______
#######

This prevents any dwarves from mining under other dwarves.  If I do big pits I do basically the same thing except I also have to skip rows for both access and security.
