Embark - Neighbors (No Goblins = No Sieges?)

On the embark screen I only have Dwarves on the Neighbors tab.  Does this mean no goblin sieges?  Also does this mean no Human & Elven trade caravans?  Will my only challenges be wildlife, cavern dwellers & HFS?

You look for them manually - volcanoes just happen to be the easiest to locate since they're visible on the world map.

Why do you need surface magma, anyways? If you embark in a reasonably flat area, magma generally won't be more than 40 Z-levels down, and that's not very far for metalworkers to walk if you use vertical stairways (they'll probably have to walk further than that to get from their bedrooms to your food and booze stockpiles).

Generate a hundred volcanoes. They will be easy to find.
Advanced world gen has a cap of 200. ;)

generaye a "LAzy Newb World" using the Lazy Newb Pack. If you like ASCII just set it before anything else (in the "graphics" tab). This will make a ton of volcanoes and low savagery. Go ahead and try it!

I have embarked in a goblin free enviroment. Since this is my first serious fortress since the 2D version, I chose a newby friendly area so I won't have to deal with sieges while I'm learning to play. I'm pretty sure the security will get boring eventually, though.

try modding in mountain gnome civs... did not end well when I forgot that I had modded in handheld ballistae as well

200 in a medium region tends to equal near infinite rejects.

You could easily have opened init and changed invaders to NO.

Then if you get bored with how easy the game is, you can turn it to YES and get invaders.

So far, my fort has lost only 2 dwarfs in 2 and a half years, so it is indeed a bit easy. Maybe I'll just pick a fight with the humans (or the elves if they ever show up).But before doing that, I need to prepare my defenses and militia.

I run around in the caverns in adventurer mode and look for magma vents in the top 2 cavern levels.  Then I embark a fortress onto that location.
