In terms of their nuclear program, Iran probably only played crazy on tv. They had really strong incentives for a MAD defense, as two of their neighbors were invaded by the US, and a third hosting US drone strikes. On top of that, the Israelis have a whole bunch of nukes and are very unfriendly towards Iran (and pretty much everyone else at this point). Then there's the Saudis, in many ways their rivals, who have long been looking for nuclear protection without having their own nuclear program (and as of last year, it was revealed that a large portion of Pakistan's nuclear program was paid for by the Saudis, and that the Saudis could likely acquire nuclear weapons from Pakistan in short order if they wanted to). So they certainly have quite a lot of valid geopolitical reasons to want to acquire nuclear weapons.

Of course, now that the sanctions made that course of action untenable, they have changed course, and appear to be attempting to do what the Saudis did and cozy up with the west, possibly even hoping to usurp the Saudi position as 'most favored religious totalitarian state.'

Well, actually i agree. why would it make them any more furious? they were religiously furious and waged a jihad (holy war) since their religion was invented up until this very moment.

Indeed, every single Muslim has been at war with the entire rest of the world since the religion's inception, which means that nuking their most holy city would do nothing to increase their anger.  Thank you for that insightful comment.

Ofcourse nuking Mecca would piss muslims off.
However, they wouldn't be able to spend resources on Jihad. They would be too busy spending all their life and money on cleaning up and rebuilding Mecca.
They'd take the radiation cancer for granted. Whomever dies in Mecca, or en route to Mecca, instantly goes to heaven anways.

Seriously? What does writing it down matter? Look at actual history...

Almost all of the largest world empires in human history have been from secular nations. None of whom had holy, written agendas about it, even right in the height of power. Therefore, statistically, in the future as well, you should worry about secular conquest much more than religious.

And your worries should have little or nothing to do with whether a group has world domination written out or not. Because it simply does not correlate well with actual conquest.

If and when the circumstances become right again in the future for Britain or anybody else to make huge power grabs, chances are they will. You can pretty much just pretend almost every country in the world has "we would like to take over the world if we can" written down, for all practical purposes.

Terrible. But also, this is why Israel put up the big concrete wall. Ever since they did that, they did not suffer suicide bombers anymore. I remember, back in the days, before that wall was built, suicide bombers in Israel made the news here quite a few times a year.

I'd find Christianity a much better equivalent. A big part of Europe was baptised by the sword (often several times, because yay plunder) or under threat, and then we have the constant purging of "heresies" and how Christianity was forced unto other people during colonial times. Christianity didn't become the biggest religion in the world by hosting tea parties.

When cartels shoot a couple of cops, we respond by investing more in the problem and trying to be smarter. We don't go blow up half a Mexican city in retaliation. Somehow, amazingly, America has not crumbled as a result!  GASP! Imagine that.

If you like analogies that much, let me tell you that cartels are apples and jihadists are oranges. Of course after 911, when jihadists killed a couple of Americans, America reacted calmly and reasonable and outsmarted the terrorists instead of blowing up half the Middle East, that's why Islamic terrorism is no longer a threat. (Sorry for the sarcasm, but my point is, analogies are of very limited use if you're talking about very complicated realities.)

It is absolutely legitimate to be critical about the current offensive in Gaza, but you need at least a basic understanding about the context and what is going on there, otherwise you risk coming off like you have no idea what you are talking about, no offense.
