I thought 'isn't there maybe an Iraqi ethnicity? (probably confused by EU3/4, and the fact that Iraqi nationalism is an extremely recent thing)', so I looked it up. Turns out that 'ethnic iraqi' doesn't really exist, at least theres no ethnic group calling themselves Iraqi.

They've also been part of every civilization ever to exist in the Fertile Cresent or otherwise occupy the region.

Although, when they formed Iraq and such, they really didn't think about whether or not the people would appreciate it.

Same goes for anyplace else the colonial powers meddled with.

I don't know how happy the Saudis are with the current Saudi Arabia-Iraq border, but that border (and possibly the Jordan-Iraq border) risks getting redrawn when the Sunni and Shiia sections split. Also, Baghdad is probably going to be contested because it's smack in the middle of the mixed Shiia-Sunni area.

How about the Holy Roman Empire? That used to be made of many smaller states, some were city states.

Any other examples of regions fragmented into city states in the past that anybody know of, other than Italy?

like persia

and that the greek polis weren't even conquered by him in any meaningful sense

and that extreme decentralization was tried and failed between twelve to seven centuries ago as the princely estates grew to sizes of half a village tops and they had to run a country off of that
