No elections.  My people love me. There is no need to waste time with elections when everyone already fully supports me. No elections!

Or at the very least a few liberals.

So we're back where we started. The Egyptian army is gearing up for a de facto coup, set to happen later today.

Let's hope for the best, I suppose.

And just for your information, they don't appear to be planning to intervene in favor of the government. Morel likely that they'll intervene in favor of themselves.

Why do you say that last bit? One would presume they'd be doing that naturally by participating in a coup regardless of who rules it, but you appear to be giving additional emphasis. I doubt they're that stupid.

Well given the defence minister said the army was going to intervene on the side of the government, I don't think so.

Everything they have done so far is in favor of themselves, but they do follow at least two internal doctrines; 'national security is the be-all-end-all goal/purpose' and 'stay away from the kiddie poolpolitics unless absolutely necessary'.

Sure you may not like that the military is acting for its own benefit... but they have so far passed that benefit down in the lack of a long bloody civil war/genocide like what has happened in Libya or Syria.
What more do you want from them?  When they believe that the civilian government is doing a piss poor job with both the economy and public support, they'll want to step in, cause fucking that up erodes their ability to complete their goal/purpose.

Also, I'm pretty sure they are not on the side of the civilian government.  Technically though, they are government themselves...

Coup is underway. Not sure if this should go here, or in the Arab Spring topic.. Or the Politics topic.. Either way, Morsi looks to be on the way out as I type this. Tanks moving into central Cairo, reports of Muslim Brotherhood leadership being arrested.

So... Egypt's adopting the Turkish model. Seems fine enough, at least some sembiance of democracy until they're "ready" to not vote in reactionaries or however you'd like to name the entire bullshit scheme.

Let's hope Egyptians vote for someone a bit more liberal this time.

I'd settle for anyone willing to not plan to eliminate ethnic and religious minorities or start a war with Israel.
