On Egypt
How valid is the information that the judicial branch is 'getting in the way of Egypt's process'?
Also, is the judicial branch made up of Mubarak appointed people?

I'm not entirely sure, but I think it was a bunch of courts run by the army; who themselves are at the very least as suspicious as Morsi. The general tone of things since the election has been that of Morsi vs the army for power in Egypt. In which Morsi is pretty decidedly winning; leaving him as pretty much the head of everything. So while I wouldn't say it's entirely bad, if he doesn't distribute power away from himself, he will pretty much be an unstable dictator.

They've been trying to get Un recognition and membership for a while - have they finally succeeded?

Well, the Security Council turned them down, end now the General Assembly is going to vote on that. I'm not sure what that'll change, as I think the SC can veto any country joining.

Yeah, the assembly is mostly pwoerless. Apparently it could grant the Palestinian Authority observer status, but that's it. Of course, the SC will then have to explain why it's refusing Palestinian memberships, so PR-wise it makes sense.

Also, I'm disgusted by European's attempt to get the Palestinian to forego the right to sue Israel in the ICC. Not only is it disgusting per se, but it's also going to weaken the ICC's standing, sending a clear message that it's only meant for the people the West don't like.

People keep talking about the Palestinians getting more 'status' in the UN = less of a chance for peace talks to work.  What are they smoking?

The way things have been going... since forever, with the self-sabotage and hardline stance of both Hamas and Israel...  I don't think they are ever going to ever come to agreeable terms as it is now.

Sarcasm aside, I heard nothing of the sort from the news. (Which just proves my point that 'Democracy' is just a shiny word for Oligarchic Dictatorship) But I did hear about Berlusconi's new spending money on the girls involved in Bunga-Bunga. Oh, and of soccer players whining.

I think the vote is for Palestine to become a non-member state, like the Vatican.  It wouldn't have any power within the UN but they'd still recognise it as a country, I think?  Considering that all countries have equal say and there are no vetoes it is very likely to pass (about 80% of countries are likely to vote in favour, and most of the rest will be abstentions rather than votes against).

Yeah.  Britain has threatened to abstain from the vote if they don't get exactly that assurance, which is outrageous.

Do they realize that such a caveat is all but an admission of guilt?  "Yeah, we're aware that Israel's goverment wipes it's ass with international law every night, but they're our friends and we're going to ignore that"

I think it's more that they feel Palestine going to the international court would derail peace talks.  Really though it seems more like a bargaining chip to allow meaningful peace talks to happen.

Israel is saying they won't play unless they hold all the picture cards.

In my opinion there's better chances for negotiations to work if both sides have something on their hand, and at least this gives the palestinians something that doesn't consist of sewage pipes stuffed with sugar and dynamite.
