I don't think either the Hamas leadership or the Israeli government are terribly interested in peace. One side is lobbing all their rockets into whatever city they can reach, the other is dropping bombs in downtown Gaza, both sides are posting pictures of their dead or dying children on twitter saying "LOOK WHAT THE MONSTERS DID".

If you use some reasoning... if you kill the guy that is willingly and actually spearheading the negotiations with you... the ones left behind are not going to be any more willing or capable to do the same.

Your reasoning presumes that you actually care about the negotiations very much.

I think he was implying it was intended.

The current Israeli leadership has a lot to lose if they can't rile up some war fever and fast. If they can kill those willing to negotiate, well.. isn't REALLY their fault that no one wants to negotiate, right?

Yeah. The Russians did it in Chechenya more than ten years ago.

Ayup. In case you aren't familiar with it, Putin's rise to power was basically founded on an anti-Chechenian platform, complete with a faked terror campaign to rile up the sentiment against the Chechenians and provide that good old "the whole nation bonds and bands together in the face of adversity" reaction. How do we know it was faked? Because after the first terror attack happened, the Guy In Charge (fangs remember who) got up on stage and held a condoleance speech, as Guys In Charge are want to do... Only it was a condoleance speech for another terror attack - a terror attack that wouldn't happen until days after the speech ::)

Edit: Ehr, just to make things clear, I'm not saying Israel is fabricating the Hamas terror acts or anything (that wouldn't make any logical sense anyway). Just wanted to tell the story about how stupid the corrupt Russian guys were.

Incidentally, don't say that in Russia.

It's a cool country, it's just that politically they haven't had much luck for the last ~1000 years.

Israel apparently hab been busy conducting an assassination campaign in Gaza for the last month or so. That Hamas military chef was jsut the cherry on the cake.

I'll see if I can dig some sources.

Can't find where I've been reading this. Maybe I just made it up. Sorry.

Also, Israel is holding elections in two months. So this might explain this sudden excalation of violence.

Of course, it's their own fault that they haven't had much luck for the last 1000 years because they have an infatuation with strong leaders who put things very simply to them.

It also hasn't been cool for the chechens, ingush, tatars and all the other minorities who've been gradually conquered and assimilated over the years.

If Putin can allow Kadyrov to rule any part of his federation for any duration of time, you know something is very very wrong.

This has to do something with the fact that most (if not all) soft and liberal rulers of Russia tend to be giant tools whose rule usually leads to a massive disaster (for example: Tsar Nicholas II, Gorbachev, Yeltsin). All great Russian rulers were ruthless undemocratic tyrants (like Peter the Great, for example)
It also hasn't been cool for the chechens, ingush, tatars and all the other minorities who've been gradually conquered and assimilated over the years.
Generally, Russians like to respond to such statements by pointing at the colonization of the Americas and accusing the Westerners of hypocrisy.

I don't know what you're smoking, Gorbachev was a great leader.

Yeltsin's issues came less from being a tool than they came from being such an alcoholic that he gave himself brain damage.

Well, Gorbatchev is liked in the West, but not in Russia. We see it as the guy that allowed the end of Communism, Russians see him as the man that squandered their empires. Plus, the late Soviet Union was a nicer place to live in that Russia during the 90's.
