If so, I expect the theocrats will lose. That seems to be the progression nowadays.

...Is Libya headed toward a Theocratic vs Progressionist schism?

No more than it has been for the last fifty years.

Y'know, I find the online memorializing for the EVE player who died genuinely moving.  John McCain's heartfelt eulogy to the ambassador still has the gravitas though.

Ah. I was worried about the destabilizing effect of not having a figurehead/rallying point/dude with a bunch of hired muscle/scapegoat around.

He was a big time EVE mover and shaker for Goonfleet, and he was also pretty well known on SA.  We'd talked a couple of times over the years, and I'm still feeling pretty hollowed out by this situation.

I think it says a lot about how people form relationships in the modern world that I'm a lot more hit by knowing that this guy was part of EVE and SA than knowing he was a US ambassador.

It's the internet at its best - similar to the "Santorum" way, but way more heartwarming.
YAY internet!

I'm going to do the smart thing here and disengage. This isn't a hill I paticularly care to die on.

The joke he made about embassy security being weak and mainly there to protect classified information doesn't seem so funny anymore.

That's because it's not really a joke.  :-\

This whole thing really pisses me off. Seriously, I'm not going to go on a murderous rampage if someone makes a shitty youtube video about how atheism is bad. In fact, people make those all the time. People need to grow the fuck up.

I'm sure there's a small group who would be pissed. Add to that a country which has been recently destabilized, a lot of guns floating around, and you'd probably have the same result, i'd bet.

He was an IT guy that was there when shit went down.

And the reason he was there? He stayed behind after everyone had left to complete his duty - destroying classified information and cryptography equipment.
