What interest does Russia and/or China have in Syria anyway?

In the case of Russia, it's part cold war legacy and part multi-billion dollar arms contracts.
China just butts in because the west doesn't want them to. And to snatch up some of those multi-billion dollar arms contracts.

Dictatorships falling tend to cause other dictatorships to fall. When people see tangible results from standing up against authoritarian regimes it can be...inspiring to them.

China is always ready to defend other nations' "right" to take care of their own business, because they don't like when the outside has issues with how they treat their populace.

Syria is in Russia's sphere of influence. They don't want the Western Powers (I *think* it's a better term than "The US") to meddle in their turf. China doesn't want the Western Powers to widen their influence.

TL, DR: Russia protects Syria not to lose. China protects Syria so that the West doesn't win.

The main reason for the Russians is their naval base in Tartus.
If Russia gets knocked out of Syria, the Russian Navy will be knocked out of its only base in the Mediterranean Sea.
Also, it is believed in Russia that if they will not interfere, Syria will fall, Iran will follow, then the Americans will take over Central Asia, and after that, Russia will have to deal with American troops standing on Russia's extremely long and undefendable southern border (not the mention the potential refugee problem and the destabilization of the Caucasus region)

Do the US really have any interest in going to war against Russia anymore though ? I mean, Russia is a shell of its former glory. Much of its international influence is gone.

It's interesting to see how people in other countries think though.

Well I mean, unless America is taken over by a fanatical dicator crazyier than Kim Jong Ill was, the USA will never fight Russia. Simply, Russia has nukes, the US has nukes, they both have triangular second strike capability, any conflict would result in mutual desturction and unacceptable losses.

Russia does not have the international clout it once had, which is all the more reason for it to keep the clout it has now.

Oh by the way if Syria fell, no fucking way Iran would fall. Those guys prepared, they have tanks, an air force, a gigantic and loyal army, and Iran almost has nuclear weapons. In terms of degrees of preperations, I would say it goes like this: Libya (totally un-prepared, abandoned a nuclear program.)-Syria (clearly didn't prepare enough, should have had a bigger army and had the people more relient on the state.)-Iran (reasons articulated earlier)-China(Class A operation, I can't really think of anything that is wrong with their model besides the fact that the Tyranny is obvious, which is kinda hard to avoid.).

Iran has a much larger number of people unhappy with the state of the nation. As in, a good 40% of the population large.

Also, Russia and China are quite pissed off that the West and it allies used the "no-fly zone" in Libya as an excuse for bombing the shit out of Qaddaffi's troops (Which was arguably overreaching the resolution's goals). They don't want the same to happen in Syria, so they block everything to prevent similar "mission creep".

Jet was shot in the Syrian airspace, and crashed in Syrian waters, so even NATO and west propaganda would have hard time twisting facts into "aggression" this time.

This is true, but then there is the fact that we (or at least I) don't know exactly how far they penetrated into Syrian airspace, and also I don't know whether it was a rogue crew (which would speak volumes of the average individual Turkish airman's thoughts on this matter and possibly by extension the rest of the Turkish soldiery though I don't know much of it)

In the first matter, if they were very near the border with no clear intentions of aggression (which should be determinable via their flight pattern) and it was possibly communications failure to blame or human error to blame; even if the Turks deliberately did such a thing to probe the response of the Syrians with the expectation that their reaction would not be as harsh as it was, it is a very grievous insult to the Turks. On the other hand, if they penetrated deeply into Syrian airspace with every seeming intention to presumably violate orders and perform a strike inside Syria then the Syrian government has a justifiable excuse for shooting it down; from a neutral 3rd person view.

For the second matter, if airmen are beginning to disobey orders then some policy changes need to be done by Russia's political powers to avoid plunging the world into a war of Western vs Eastern powers. Either that or the Russian people or soldiery themselves must remove these same political powers in order to prevent the devastation that a third world war would bring to our world, conventional or nuclear.

Dude, calm down, there is no way we're going to war against each other because of Syria. Frankly, the only thing that could cause a war is a totally reckless miscalculation by Putin deciding to protect the Russians of Estonia and Latvia in the same way he protected the "russians" of Georgia.

Didn't what I just type agree with that? Also you are misunderestimating the nationalist desire for secure energy in which Syria plays a vital role apparently to Russia according to current policy.
