I thought Catholics were a minority in USA :S

They are. But they are monolithic. There are thousands of different types of protestants. There is only one Catholicism.

Note how few of those blue counties have the black dot noting that more than 50% of the total population belongs to that denomination.

There's also the Hispanic population, who are almost 100% devout Catholic.  That's why pretty much all the Catholic dots are in New Mexico, southern Texas, and a few rural areas.

I do think it's interesting that there's not a single county in the country with a majority non-Christian population.  You'd think there'd be at least an Indian reservation or something.  Heck, even the Alaskan tundra reports Christian faiths (obviously polled from the three guys they could find in each county).

Most of the reservations are pretty devoutly Christian. There's very few animists or shamanic believers anymore. Most of the ones you get in the Southwest are just doing it so they can smoke peyote legally (imho).

Even in Hawaii, the most Buddhist state in the country, it's only about 6%. New York and New Jersey are the most Jewish states, and yet they still only hit the 6% mark. Interestingly, despite the widespread Catholic presence in the country there is no state that is majority Catholic. New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts come the closest, all around 42-43%.

Pew has a good reference for all this: http://religions.pewforum.org/maps#.

For the record, Vermont is the most godless US state, with (from memory) a 22% religion-less population.

I'm perfectly o.k. with people expressing their positive attitude by wishing for their imaginary friends to help me. I don't know about other atheists though.

Well, it's still related, as the merits and dangers of a lack of God/State separation are discussed in closer-to-home examples.

Previously mentioned Ennahda might be a wolf in sheeps clothing, some fear. That they do intend to make it a theocracy the first chance they'll get. Let's hope for the best.

To be fair God is sure mentioned a lot in American stuff (on money, in pledge of allegiance etc) for a supposedly secular country. I really don't see a problem with Muslims having analogues to this in their own governments, as long as they're tolerant of other religions.
And it is problem (Copts in Egypt etc).

Yes and no... I expect them to be your average religiously driven party. Though socio-christian and dem-christian are not always bad, so they could even be somewhat positive. It's not like I'd rather have a north African style socialist party in power (because that's what was in power previously, remember) and liberals could be just as bad. So I'm not more or less concerned than before.

Edit :  and pro democracy doesn't mean anything one you have democracy, beside those are pretty religious societies.

Edit 2: good news in Tunisia http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2011/10/26/353833/new-tunisian-government-promises-dignity-for-gays/

They seem surprised, but with 20/20 hindsight, they were probably in it for the chicks from the beginning ;)

I think one of the comments summed up my reaction to that article pretty well:
Quote
Seems like there is no evidence of a sexual revolution reported here - just another biased and misogynistic patriarchcal put-down on the role of young Libyan women as sexual or marriage vessels for the 'rebels'.

Shame this author did not speak to the countless women in Libya and across the Middle East who have actually been part of the 'revolution' while preserving their dignity and self-respect.

Wow, that's awesome news from Tunis. If the government remains popular this may mark the beginning of a new era of liberal Islam in Middle East.
