A good summary there.  I'd also like to add that the Ivory Coast has had major bank runs.

Looks like the rebels are putting those captured M40 recoilless guns to use. This from their battle to take over Ras Lanuf today. They're not playing defense anymore, but advancing on the Gaddafi stronghold of Sirte. Their strength is in numbers and morale though, war reporters following them aren't terribly impressed with tactics and unit cohesion.

In other news, the secret police in Egypt decided to implode tonight (probably due to the prime minister changeover, plus the old state security chief goes on trial tomorrow) and began burning all their documents, carefully collected over the years STASI-like. The army and some protesters showed up to stop them and there was an exchange of gunfire. The state security apparatus *really* don't want any public knowledge of what they've got in their offices. Or underneath, there's reports now they've found secret cells with people in them in the basement.

Hopefully live people.

... On second thought, depending on the conditions of those cells, maybe not so much hopefully... I don't hold that much optimism for the care the secret police of an autocratic regime would have for secret prisoners.

It's possible that Mubarak had been keeping them in alive enough condition just in case he needed some leverage in one group or another. Even after he was taken down, I imagine the secret police know what the people will do to them if they find the prisoners in bad condition. But then again, perhaps they are that stupid.

There's a "day of rage" mass protest planned in Saudi Arabia for next Friday the 11th.  And it's coming to gas stations near you.  Supposedly one of its planners was shot and killed.

Yes I agree.  And to top it off, iD is releasing Rage sometime in September.  Can't wait!

The name gives them a bad taste in their mouth.  It's personal preference, it's semantics, it's the way that Hitler ruined a perfectly good moustache--just on a different and more local scale.

I like that analogy. That is an extremely good way of explaining it.

Al Jazeera has a very nice little summary of all the chaos in the middle east.

According to the protesters, he is firing at Zawiyah right now with tanks.

The Electricity and phones is down in that area, but I am sure more videos can be found already from people who didn't burn out the batteries in their phone already.

Looks like Qaddafi has something against Zawiyah right now.
The guardian's interactive map says the Khamis Brigade moving in from the west, and more troops are coming in from the east. The protesters are fortifyiing the town square for a showdown.

He has all the elements required of badass-ness. Somehow I expect there to be an action figure made of him.

Double-barrelled shotgun? Check.
Machete? Check. (slung in an ammo belt, no less)
Cigarette? Check.

Good luck, guys. Insha'allah, Qaddafi's going down.
UPDATE: Reuters reporting that a Libyan fighter jet has been shot down near Ra's Lanuf, a small town along the central Libyan coast, between Sirte and Benghazi.

that's not a machete, that's an axe. The same level of badassery, but the distinction must be made.
