Richard Engel finally made it back on TV.  Being fluent in Arabic, he listened to Qaddafi's big telephone speech, about how drug-addled youth and al-Qaeda are behind the protest revolt.  He wandered off into talking about America, Kurdistan, Italy, and the United Nations.  At several points he started mumbling incoherently and kept bumping into his microphone.  He ended by abruptly hanging up, giving the state radio station such a pause that the airwaves were just a dialtone for a few seconds before recorded cheering and songs started up.  Engel's assessment: "I've been listening to speeches by Arab leaders for about fifteen years, and Qaddafi... did not sound sane."

Meanwhile, the citizens of Benghazi have essentially formed their own breakaway state, complete with courts, traffic cops, broadcast news, and border patrols.  A British warship apparently pulled into the port, and there's (probably wildly outlandish) rumors of international recognition, at least of a new government forming there if not an actual new country.

There needs to be direct intervention at this point. It may set a bad precedent, but at this point it is evident that Libya is a state under the thumb of true Chaotic Evil, and if something is not done swiftly by the international community, something is bound to happen. Nothing good.

Oh wow, Qaddafi might be insane? No shit, Engel.

I think we pretty clearly recognized that around the time he sent warships to bomb Tripoli and started making lunatic press conferences with umbrellas and rants about how he's a great Bedouin warrior who made Libya and will be the one to unmake it.

I'm with Ampersand here, someone needs to deal with this madman directly before he buys a black market nuke and really does unmake Libya.

At this point Khadaffi is basically just the mayor of Tripoli.  He'll be out of there soon enough.  I've already heard rumors today that he was shot dead.

I saw rumors earlier that there's some major initiatives in Tripoli to burn bodies and repaint buildings to give a good show to the media today, but by now there might not even be a point.

I know Libya has mustard gas.  It's kinda ancient as far as chemical weapons go, and against actual military personnel it's just a minor annoyance, but civilians would be completely defenseless against it.  I'm not aware of Libya having biological weapons.

Hell, I can make mustard gas with over the counter cleaning supplies you can buy at any supermarket.

Also Hafaffi sounds absolutely insane.  Where is the CIA when you need them?

Doing what they always do. Gathering information while trying to spread the idea that they are an ultra-powerful omnipresent organization that monitors everyone at all times, even though the latter reputation is probably pure fantasy.

I expect James Bond to act any second now.

Yeah, they pretty much just read newspapers in foreign languages and send unfriendly dictators packs of cyanide laced cigars every once in a while.

One would think if they were reading foreign newspapers, they might have known about the USSR dissolving into civil war or India testing a nuclear bomb before CNN did.  Then again, that's CNN's job too.

I think at this point it's more SOP for US re: crazy dictators. Just so long as it isn't the catch-all term "Weapons of Mass Destruction".
