Italian Foreign Ministry has categorically denied any involvement by Italy in today's occurrences. Albeit, nobody trusts government ministries in the first place, so it's a moot point.

Sheik Yusuf al-Qaradawi of the Muslim Brotherhood has issued a fatwa that any Libyan Army personnel obeying orders to shoot civilians is committing a sin. He also called for anybody who can kill Qaddafi to do so (i.e. typically it's a grave sin for one Muslim to spill another's blood. Consider this an excommunication of sorts for Qaddafi.)

Just waiting for some FOX pundit or radio nut to get a hold of this and use it as proof that the protestors are all radical Muslim terrorists.

Wasn't Ghaddafi pretty much excommunicated already? He sort of rewrote the Koran and tortured an imam to death.

Wait, he rewrote *Koran*? How come there wasn't a massive jihad against Libya?

Because Muslims extremism is totally overrated.

But that's like a million times worse than all those caricatures combined. Altering Koran is probably the most sacrilegious thing possible. Even blowing up Mecca wouldn't come close.

People rewrite and alter religious texts all the time and no one cares.

It's not like this is the first time a dictator has done somthing strange with the Quran.

Even blowing up Mecca wouldn't come close.
I'm fairly certain that blowing up Mecca would be seen as worse than altering the Quran. Just taking a bit of a shot in the dark here.

tortured an imam to death.

So did Saddam, so did Mubarak, so have the Saudi royals. And probably half a dozen other dictators around the Arab Crescent.

But yes, good point. He was pronounced kafir (infidel) by a group of Muslim scholars some years back for suggesting that the quls be struck from the Koran. Of course, given that there's no final authority (among men) in Islam, it's not as definitive as an excommunication in Catholicism.

Islam is pretty strict about messing with Koran, to the point where translations are unacceptable for service.

Yes, but one of the five pillars of Islam is making a pilgrimage to Mecca. If Mecca were destroyed, that would be sort of impossible for anyone to do. You could just get rid of an altered Quran.

Okay, it gets weirder. There are multiple reports of non-African mercenaries in Tripoli, possibly Bangladeshis or Koreans. Great, now Kim Jong-Il's crazy ass is potentially involved in this?? What is this, the last stand of the Legion of Doom?

Problem, Libya? (If he really gets involved in this, then in my mind he will have taken first place in being Earth's Greatest Troll.)

Libyan airspace just got officially closed. Hope someone tells that to the Kenya Airways 777 heading for Nairobi at the moment.

They'll get the message once they come within radio range. Or within missile range, whichever is more convenient.

Which incidentally would make blowing up Mecca the most epic troll move ever...

It's like one of those godawful shooters where Cuba, North Korea, Iran, and France all get together to invade the United States.  Only not quite as dumb.  I've always thought Qaddafi was made for these kind of caricatures, he's the closest thing to a Dr. Doom, Blofeld, Ras al-Ghul style head-of-state supervillain the modern world really has.  And he's kind of a poor excuse for one, but so it goes.

I think it says a lot more, provided it's even true, that professional contract military men can come and go from North Korea and nobody noticed until they get to work.

11:18pm: Ojli calls for international action "to stop the killings".

11:16pm: Ali Ojli, Libya's ambassador to the US, is on air live now on Al Jazeera English. Watch here.

International action? What does he mean?
