Latest from Egypt: Mob war in the streets.  The promised million protesters finally turned out in Tahrir Square, and almost immediately clashed with the couple thousand or so Mubarak supporters (some paid, many not).  Sticks and stones, bottles and rocks, swords and camels.  No really.  The Army, still stationed in the streets and reputedly running low on field supplies and desperate to demobilize, made some attempt to keep the crowds separated, but quickly gave up and sat back to watch.  Similar fights have broken out in Alexandria and other cites; in Cairo they go in fits and spurts, since the mass is too large for one side of the crowd to communicate with the other.

This is in response to Mubarak's announcement last night, that he would step down... with the next Presidential elections, in September.  Almost certainly with his heir apparent being the only name allowed on the ballot.  The situation could change again at any time.

I don't understand why they even still care what he says. Get together the opposition leaders, head into government offices, kick some people out and start running stuff.

I don't get this dude. The whole country screaming for him stepping down and all he promises is not running this year?
It's as if he were asking for it.

I hereby propose that the 'trollface' meme be immediately, irreversibly and completely be replaced with Mubarak's visage.

Doubly hilarious since he acts like it's some courteous move even though the "elections" were undoubtedly rigged in the first place.

Then again, its takes time to transfer over to a new government, if he steps down now, there will be a huge struggle for power.

It appears that at least a fairly large portion of the "pro-mubarack" supporters are really police officers in plain clothes. The anti-mubarack protesters found this out after searching a few, so they think (probably correctly) that the pro mubarack are all cops.

The security services apparently employs upwards of a million, who might have realised a few pertinent facts if the regime falls:

1. They'll be out of a job, with poor prospects of a new one.
2. Their job has consisted of arresting, torturing, threatening and extorting people, in no particular order.
3. Everybody hates them.

There are reports that in addition to plainclothes police, high-up National Oligarchy Party members have paid out of town thugs 300 egybucks each to come to town and beat up people.

If he flees soon enough, he won't die. And if you try really hard to stay in power, sometimes it works, thats what he is hoping happens. Doesn't look like it will, but he still has lots of time to flee.
