I wouldn't be surprised if the "offending movie" was actually created by the group, specifically to incite outrage. But that would be wildly irresponsible speculation.

No, we know the guy who made it is Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, a Coptic Christian from Egypt who immigrated to America.

Especially since the creator is known, and so is also his well established connections to a Californian anti-islam grouping.

Oh wow. Pakistani protestor dies from fumes from burnt American flag.

Can't say I feel too sorry for him, partly because he was burning the flag, but mostly because he was to stupid not to suffocate on it.

It's just a flag, but its a flag that represents the nation I live in and concepts I hold dear. Just because someone can burn it doesn't mean I have to have sympathy for them.

Like I said, I really don't see how you could suffocate on a burning flag unless you aren't the sharpest knife in the bulb. Especially if he was outside, which it stands to reason he was.

I would like to raise the possibility that these riots were sparked by the video, but under it there is the anger against what America has done in middle eastern countries. I'm not anti american, but they did go in there and make a mess "looking for oil nuclear weapons. Maybe that has something to do with the anger. At least in the countries where America has done stuff to deserve it.
Sorry if this has been said already, I haven't searched all of the pages.
(Also, please don't derail this onto the nukes/oil discussion because I imagine it has been discussed already.)

Hey, what are you selling Jim?"
"Flags! It's a booming business."
"But... You're an American! They're burning your flag!"
"Well, I sell the flags at 25 bucks a pop..."
"Yeah?"
"So read the sign"
*sign says 'all proceeds go to the American Military*

That's a major double-screwup of the west: "Intervening" in Baghdad even though there were no great protests, and not intervening in Syria even though the people there want it to. Now in the course of the war they will become more and more radicalized and anti-western as we continue our (perceivedly) pro-Assad policy. Just look at the numbers for Libya: These countries don't dislike interventions in general, they dislike interventions with a shady motivation.

Dude, you do realize we've cut diplomatic ties with Syria, sanctioned them economically, and sent the rebels covert aid, right? That isn't pro-Assad at all. Obama even got on international television and told him to step down.

Yeah, short of outright invading, there is little the West could do.

I'm against interviening in Syria. Not that I don't want happiness and free puppies for all oppressed people, anywhere, but because we have been interviening for the past decade (and more subtly, years before that), and it hasn't done any- as Andrew Carniegie so famously said- Real and Permanent Good.
