The Right Response to the Libya and Egypt Attacks

Quote
First, diplomacy still matters, perhaps above all else. Hillary Clinton reported this morning, in her most eloquent news conference as secretary of state, that Libyan citizens and security forces had tried to fight off the small mob of militants who set fire to the U.S. consulate in Benghazi and that, afterward, they’d sheltered many survivors and carried the ambassador, J. Christopher Stevens, to a nearby hospital. They did this, in good part, because they knew Stevens. A year ago, as the U.S. emissary, he had helped the rebels—who now form Libya’s fledgling democratic government—in their fight to overthrow Muammar Qaddafi. Ever since, he’d been greeted as a friend in his travels around the country.

Of course desperation justifies (some) immorality. But it certainly doesn't justify all immoral acts.

Stealing is immoral, but if your son will die if you don't, the immorality is justified. Killing and eating people is immoral, but if you're dying in the wilderness and you survive when the alternative was everyone in your party dies, that immorality could certainly be considered justified. When your facing a superior force that's going to destroy your people and kill them off, and the only way you can fight back is by killing those who supply them but are technically innocent, I'd say that could well be justified.

The problem is that this /type/ of desperation by no means justifies this /type/ of immorality.
I would like to point out... that the Islamists in question probably do not have the same view as you/'us' when it comes to what is morale or immoral.
Does it excuse it?  In a way, yea.  They may really think they are doing right when they attacked the consulate in retaliation... among other things they do.
Their view of things can be so bizarrely different from ours.  It probably can only be fixed in a very very long process of education and constant exposure to other cultures.
Maybe religious conversions to something less 'hard-line' and/or a long process of aggressively stamping out the 'hard-line' religions...

The German and British embassies in Khartoum, Sudan were stormed by about 5,000 people today, also because of this weird and still ethereal film. Luckily, the Sudanese police held them off.

Muslim Brotherhood expresses sympathy to US Embassy over Twitter in English, then immediately turns around and posts in Arabic that the embassy attacks are a victory for the Prophet.

The US Embassy did indeed do just that. The Muslim Brotherhood denies everything.

This isn't the first time an Islamist group has assumed that Westerners have no access to Arabic and they can say whatever they want without fear of being found out.

There's also the possibility that their English and Arabic Twitter feeds are handled by different people with different opinions. Just sayin'.

Well, if so the arabic guy needs to be fired, they're about to start riots/a war here. The dumbshits need to get their act together and even if they want to crow about it they ought to do it privately and keep their heads down. The last thing we need is a reignition of the "MOOSLEMS R GUNNA TRYN KEEL US" mood here in the states.

Well, I for one will no longer give the muslim brotherhood any benefit of the doubt. They can't pass for moderates anymore.

I doubt it. The Muslim Brotherhood is pretty open about their intentions of wanting everyone to become Muslims, through deception or violence if necessary. This is entirely in line with their stated ideology.

Wait, when did they ever pass for moderates? I thought they only got as far as passing for opportunists (refusing to help in the rebellion and then taking all the credit)

The Muslim Brotherhood, while still (mainly) Islamist, are still moderates in Egypt. Or rather, they are "moderately Islamist", with people like the Salafists being further out on the extremity-scale.

If that's what passes for moderate in Egypt, they don't have a hope in the world.
