It's shameful. Thousands of people in the street, protesting, and the national press only took it up when the Washington post did.

But these are peaceful manifestations, in a western country. They are closer in spirit to the Iceland protests than the Islamic revolts.

I was thinking about making a thread just for it, since this one's getting pretty long in the tooth, but here's something to chew on.

The United Arab Emirates is as concerned about protests as any other Arab country right now, being the super-corrupt billionaires-only themepark-nation that they are.  They've shelled out half a billion (already) on the biggest name in private militarism - their new homeboy Erik Prince, of Blackwater fame - to build a new security contracting company (read: mercenary outfit).  Armed with total immunity from American prosecution thanks to a pointed lack of extradition treaties, and a strict "No Muslims" hiring policy to avoid any moral complications, Prince is already billing his new boy's club to other Gulf potentates as the solution to the popular revolt problem.  Supposedly, he's even shopping around a package for knocking off problematic governments, no declaration of war necessary.  Like the Iranians.

Also, his outfit is already behing schedule, with many of his supposedly highly-trained veterans coming whithout ever shooting a gun. The socialist in me is secretely pleased at this rebuff of market "efficiency".

Hi all, this is my first post here after years playing DF. Never posted before because my lack on english language.

Anyway, as spanish, this post called my attention. Dont know about media coverage in other countries, but here the demostration is being fully covered by media & gov.
Besides, there's has been lot of demostrations (much larger than this one) in the late years. This one is more covered because there are elections (is "elections" the right english term?) this sunday, and extreme left parties are trying to direct this. You can read the manifest in english here.

Well, im having some trouble to make a point myself (you know, because my bad english), so i resume:
Here's lot of discontent on the goverment (socialist), and a big turnover is expectec on sunday's elections giving many offices to the conservative party. So many people are going to the demostrations in order to show his discontent, but some extreme-left organizations are heading them against the right and the "system".
So all will be over by monday.

The only thing wrong with your English is that you're constantly apologizing for it.
Anyway, extreme-left parties? I didn't know those still held enough power to cause things like this?

Here in spain the comunist party gets around 1.000.000 votes. (actually, 969.946 on 2008 elections), being at top 5.000 people on the demostrations.

Also, I question your statements on this is covered in a non-biased manner by the media (it was covered late and poorly), and the idea that the protests are some extreme left conspiracy. There's people from all the political spectrum, they weren't sponsored by any political party, and they are criticising both major ones.

I've seen the manifest used for the Spanish demonstrations, and at least the manifest is explicitly a-political.

It's just people fed up with the status-quo, right or left. I wish I knew an answer or an alternative.

The proposal as it is now suggest voting from any party other than the two major ones.

Also, I doubt very much it will end in monday, given that the underlying reasons for it are the huge economical crisis (40% of youth unemployment) and frustration with the perceived self-serving nature of the political class.

Recent calls to dissolve the protests by force haven't helped with that last bit.

You seem to be informed, so you'll already know the demostration has been  called by the movement "democraciarealya.es" (true democracy now). Whose founder is Manuel J. Roman Estrade, also top member of "Izquierda Andaluza" (andalusian left), formerly member of "Izquierda Unida" (united left).
Beside their claims to raise taxes, stronger regulations on companies, expropiation on unocupied homes...

Anyway, i never said that EVERYBODY there is extreme-left, just that left groups are instrumentalicing the wide discontent.

No, i take the one calling the demostration, as you can see here (I assume you can read spanish, well, i assume you're also spanish, so im not the only one here, yayˇˇ), that link is from "El Pais", left-biased newspaper. Here you can see another one, from "el diario de mallorca". Even you can see it on wikipedia, if you credit it.

Beside that interview was AFTER the vandalization, can you give any proof about its faked, or do i have to take your word for it? (its only me who need to provide proof about an statement?)
