Wouldn't you want your own people to name your 'movement'?  Instead of some foreigners naming your 'movement' for you?

I'm pretty sure we can upgrade them to rebels.

Protesting usually comes down to something basic, people gathering to protest, which may or may not become a riot with small groups / random people bringing along a weapon or two.

They are drilling and training volunteer forces and arming them with weapons, with the full intent of fighting and probably dying for their cause.

Although apparently there has been some Twitter traffic by folks in east Libya saying, "Please don't call us rebels! We're just protesting!"

Umm, no. When you guys started getting airtstriked and attaching anti-tank rifles to cars, you became rebels. Don't worry, it's meant in the nicest way. If there's one thing we love in the West, it's rebels. The Rebel Alliance, Rebel Without A Cause, Rebel Yell, Lil' Rebel, the Rebels of Ole Miss....



Oh, and some of the Benghazi authorities have begun referring to their rag-tag fugitive fleet militia as "the Libyan People's Army". So you're not far off the mark.

Looks like there are advantages with desert warfare. A plane dropped a 500lb bomb right next to a band of armed pro-democracy activists who had several high profile international reporters with them. The bomb just buried itself in the dune and puffed up a shitton of sand. Nobody got hurt.
