Facebook's Integration Into Everything
« on: January 27, 2011, 05:51:31 pm »

Is anyone else getting irritated by Facebook (and, indeed, Twitter) shoving themselves into everything? I know it's because social sites come and go and you're less likely to be forgot about if you force integration into things. It just seems like a cheap, irritating tactic that adds nothing to the vast majority of gamer's playing experience. :|

Or am I the only one who gets irritated at this crap?

Yep. That's why I've locked my FB account down to pretty nothing. I don't want and/or need FB to recommend me things. I do not need to provide ad data when I'm not even using FB. Twitter is about as useless as tits on a bull, yet it gets appended to anything with an internet connection.

The inclusion of FB and/or Twitter in any game product pretty much tells me the company in charge is desperate for exposure. I'm sure on paper it seems like a good idea. In practice I don't think it really generates them much additional money. It just serves as an entry point for everyone else to make a buck.

It's really annoying, yeah.

I've read somewhere that Facebook is to socialising what masturbating is to sex. Good comparison, imo.

Just mildly peeved is what I am. I commend Facebook for being the incredible success it is today, and though I haven't seen any atrocious inclusions I don't mind that much.

Pretty much every major website has a little Facebook thingamabob on its site, where you can 'like' things or whatever.  And because of the way it works, if you're logged in, Facebook tracks every visit and every pageview on every site that has those thingamabobs and links them to your account.

So...yeah.

I'm more annoyed that because I don't have a Facebook (the whole "sell your information" thing doesn't sound that great). Wish more sites used OpenID or something actually semi-useful and that didn't sell your information for ads :P

openID is run by google so you already sold your name to a ad company

As a news junkie, a little bit of me dies inside every time I'm watching the news, and some notable person's Twitter updates are treated as a story.  A little bit of my TV dies inside whenever totally random nobodies' Twitter responses are treated as analysis of a story.

Facebook is to talk about what happened yesterday.
Twitter is to talk about what happened in the last five seconds.

The world would probably be much better if facebook just disappeared from the universe and never returned.

The internet is littered with the corpses of dead social networking sites.  Facebook's days are numbered.

Every other commercial on TV mentions Facebook (or Twitter) in some way and it's aggravating.  I see stories on local news about some Facebook group and my blood boils.  It has a movie, Mark Zuckerberg is Time's man of the year and Facebook does some $50 billion private deal with Goldman Sachs and there's talk of an IPO in 2012.  And all the buzz is over some website that lets people share lolcat pictures and stories about their drunken antics.
