Building a well below an underground lake: Water Presure
« on: January 27, 2011, 11:13:01 am »

Hi,

Do i need to install a pump before my well to keep my fort from flooding if i'm using a water supply thats higher than my well?

Code: [Select]
Water
| |
| | < = 14 z-levels
| |__________________|Well  |
|_______________Pump______|

Something like that?

No - a diagonal gap (through which pressure cannot propagate) will also work.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

How would that work?

Code: [Select]
Water

Diagonal on the horizontal, not vertical.

...after an aborted attempt to represent it myself, I'll just give you a link that explains it much better than I would:

A U-Bend (like you're using) will only remove one Z-level worth of pressure.  You could chain together a bunch of U-Bends (delivering fresh well water to every Z-level!) or you could use the diagonal 1x1 "dwarven pressure regulator" to eliminate water pressure entirely.  The water behind the regulator will still be pressurized, and if you try to tap the supply upstream of the regulator, you *will* flood your fort.  If you draw unpressurized water downstream, you'll have no such problem.  You could then use a pump stack and floodgates to re-elevate water to any Z-level where you want fresh drinking water.
How would that work?

It's more work, but I've found that it's easiest not to worry about what places have or do not have pressure and to make anti-pressure formations around the well shaft itself.

So, beneath my well, there's a + sign of walls (with the shaft in the center) on any level where water can get into the well shaft from the side.  The level with the well doesn't need that.

I say this because I once made a complex setup to feed multiple wells.  I tried removing pressure at all the inlet points, missed one, and would've flooded the entire fortress if I had not made an emergency drainage pump ahead of time out of paranoia.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Whats a good number of wells to have?

I was going to put one in the Booze Hall then put the hospital some where near by.

Actually, no you can't, since U-bends do not remove any pressure at all - they only reduce apparent pressure when you're tapping the side of an unpressurized body of water (i.e. a river that's being permitted to drain off the map edge) because they're forcing the water to move downward from its original level (and to which it cannot return unless the source itself is pressurized).

You only really need one well. To ensure the water is always fresh I first use a diagonal to break water pressure, and then use a pump to pump water into a completely artificial cistern. Its made entirely out of rock blocks. Preferably marble. All walls and floors are made out of rock blocks. So far this has always worked to ensure the water in the well is fresh.

Anyone had any luck using fortifications, for depressurizing water?

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.

Although fortifications should prevent any undesired guests from making an amphibious assault, as far as I know they don't affect water pressure at all?
