« on: January 26, 2011, 02:35:57 pm »

Yeah, was working on my fort, gettng the army ready, when suddenly, I see this popup message. I immediately hit the A key and checked...

You can go into the announcements text file and change just what announcements pop up.

I think that it is now possible for two dwarves to have a child before they are married, and this automatically marries them (but doesn't come up as a message, just the "Urist McMother had a baby").  I haven't been able to provide any evidence though, since I don't like to micromanage my dwarves that much.

I've had a lot of dwarven children born outside of marriage, means a female dwarf gives birth and there's no marriage, and she's not married to anyone already, but has a lover. In some forts I never get a marriage. In others, every single dwarf has the wedding itch.

The frequency of marriage may depend on dieties?  If there's a god of marriage and childbirth, perhaps weddings are more common?  No proof behind this AT ALL, just speculation.

And what exactly is the difference between a married couple and lovers? Just the official announcement?

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

Dwarves wait until they're married.

Most of your married dwarves will arrive on the area already married as immigrants. I usually only see this marriage message once every couple of forts, and it always provokes the same question:

What is a formal wedding celebration among dwarves?

I see the message all the damn time. It's almost entirely because I use 1-tile meeting areas.

1-tile meeting areas can also result in your fortress's children all becoming legendary in every social skill.  I would advise just using it to get marriages and then switch to a standard one later unless you want your entire population to blink blue.

I dunno, I've only ever seen a marriage when I've allowed Dwarves to idle.  And that doesn't tend to happen much in the first 5 or 6 years of any given fort.
