Goblins sitting at the door, doing... nothing...
« on: January 25, 2011, 01:08:59 pm »

and ignoring the entrance to the maze of head cracking hammers.

See, there is a path into my fortress, that runs the gauntlet of Ugly Traps, but the Goblins are just sitting right next to the entrance of it, doing nothing.  And the managed to catch my squad of marksdwarfs (who wouldn't train archery no matter what I did) outside, so my combat capable units are dead.  Aside from that, all but one of my surviving dwarves are inside, the doors into the fighting area are locked (so the idiot dwarves don't run back out), and the fort is more or less self sufficient.

Now what?

The answer is magma.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Actually now that I think about it, I've got piles of wood outside, a dwarf that they are ignoring (who is sitting around mourning that he has nothing to do), and a walled in back entrance.

I'm going to build a lid, and open up my old front door, until I train up an army that can fight them.

Can you get additional ambushes while the first is still active?

Yes. Yes you can. I've had sieges arrive will still being sieged. It's quite annoying. On note, ar the goblins standing around a goblin corpse? Or a caged goblin. Not sure about ambushes, but I think they're similar to sieges, in that a squad of goblins will follow the leader of the squad around. If the leader dies or is caged, they'll just stand around the body/cage, and only attack if something comes too close.

Yep, if a leader of the squad dies/gets caged they will stop moving and stand around the body/cage until they see a hostile.

And now I'm getting funny mental images:

Goblin Leader: To victory!
Goblins: Yeah!!
Goblins charge forward. Leader gets caged
Goblin 1:Well...now what?
Goblin 2: Umm....no clue....let's just wait and see what happens.
Goblin 3: Look! A little kitten!
Goblins chase after kitten, ignoring the wide open entrance into the fortress.

I bait my trap row with a chained animal hidden behind fortifications, to prevent archers from ruining my perfectly good lure.

Normally, people use puppies as their lures.

Some use war dogs.

I use wolves.

That explains quite a bit, actually.  See the traps are Steel Hammer Traps with 10x Steel hammers apiece, and as it turns out, hammer traps generate knock-back just like wielded hammers, and when the first two Goblins stepped in the traps, they got hammered into the channel I dug to keep my drawbridge out of reach.  So right now, two of the Goblins are wandering around in the ditch below my bridge.

If I'm understanding the drawbridge mechanics, if I drop it, it will atomize them and their stuff, but, it will let the other Goblins in through the open path.

This is going to be fun.

If the channel is meant to keep the bridge out of reach of building-destroyers, then it will not atom-smash the goblins in the channel. It will create a roof over their head.

Goblins on the space next to the channel, where the bridge lands, however ...

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

The goblins won't try to come in because you've locked the doors that would let them in. Confine your dwarves to a burrow encompassing your fortress (but not the outside), then unlock the doors.

There is a path into my fort.  It's just a twisty corridor filled with traps.

That said, I've discovered that hammer traps tend to punt things that they hit, which means that by this point four of the five goblins have been hammered into the well under my entrance gate.  I'll have to designate it a pond or something.
