It tends to get cluttered, even with logs, when there are very, VERY active users on it.

...and that's different to the forum thread, how? It's the largest RP thread on the forums, if I remember correctly. Literally thousands upon thousands of posts. You miss it for one day and sometimes dozens of new pages have been added. Using logs on IRC would accomplish the same thing as the 'view unread posts' button here would. Hell, it would even be faster to access and search given the reduced overhead of not being stored on a forum but instead in plaintext.

And part of the problem with the thread is that exact speed. At it's peak, you can have 4 or 5 'players' posting at once, constantly going back over posts they've made to compensate for people posting in the 3 seconds it takes them to hit 'New Post'. IRC is immediate - it's there as soon as you hit send and people can and will send in the meantime.

You're not really making much of a case here, Phantom.

Another problem is timezones and such, not to mention it relies on a connection that doesn't cut out or is slow.

actually, neither of those two things are true.

IRC was made for connections measured in baud.

in fact, on a slow connection, it's far better than forums.

As for timezones, those have the exact same effect on the forums.

Ah, Okay then. The best option I can think of then is to use both.

Timezones seems irrelevant considering half of you are on at the same time and seem to have no qualms with posting while other people aren't active at the same time. I don't think I've ever seen the thread halt and wait for someone to catch up, instead preferring to just steamroll on and let the others jump on when they've caught up.

Also, what Japa said. IRC is a protocol that was designed for instant communication pre-internet. Host it on a reliable network, decide on a consistent logging situation, and it'd be perfectly fine even if you're running of dialup from the lower Sahara. It has practically zero overhead, especially compared to other IM protocols.

Hell, if there's any interest, I'd even be willing to set up some channels for it.

I agree that IRC would be a much better place. If you're interested in something that happened, ask someone for the logs of it. Hell, it's not even that hard to set up a connection just to log what goes on, then upload the logs to some external site.

*Looks up and sees the lurkers.*
Holy hell. Where've you people been hiding?

Aaanyway, IRC wouldn't be such a good idea. Most of us have 3-5 characters that interact, as well as intermittent bits of NPCness or background.

IRC would work for a single toon, but not this many.
Just my 2 stotinki.

Since when is it too hard to go /nick for char's you're doing an extended run as, or prefixing sentences with the appropriate names? Or using colours to differentiate? That's literally what you're doing right now and you all seem to be able to cope perfectly well.

What the guy with a fill in the name said. I've done a good share of internet RP, and I've seen people who just append their messages with a colored name or something to show what character they're doing stuff as right now.

I'm against moving it to an IRC channel, because I wouldn't be able to participate anymore. That would make me sad.

EDIT: GAH! Slow day is boring!

*Sigh.*

I hate DoublePosting, but I'm surprised that nobody else has posted today. I'm bored.

ALSO: Starting my own forum. I shall post a link shortly.
