Well, holding you in a grapple won't do any real damage, a flying shoulder to the chest would.

A grapple is one of the most insidious things ever, short of groin-shots. From grapples you can initiate submission techniques. The kind that pin your body to the ground into a bodylock and have you wriggling on the mat in pain as enough stress is put on your joints to nearly make them pop.

Our sensei was an asshole. It worked.

Bats suck. Never use a bat. It's visible from half a mile and takes long swings. In the time your swing takes to form enough of an arc to be useful to hit with, the three gypsies with knives have already turned you into filet.
Collapsible batons up your sleeve. That's the best way to go.
