sealed evil in a can
« on: January 24, 2011, 11:23:13 pm »

i was unlucky enough to embark next to a cave, and in that cave was everyone's favorite megabeast, the bronze colossus. it attacked my dwarfs out of nowhere. i drafted them all into my military and engaged it in what i was sure was a hopeless fight. however, something strange happened

it dodged into a pond. that's one of my dwarfs body right next to it, who presumably dodged in as well, and drowned. but the colossus cant drown. my other dwarfs are hard at work carving out a fortress, but the question remains: what to do with the colossus? should i kill it? if so, how? should I attempt to keep it as a mascot? what use could it possibly have? the solution, I hope, is sufficiently dorfy.

You could build a full-sized, working arena around it, send in a dwarf you don't like *cough*fisherdwarf*cough* to channel a way out for it, and then throw in all your captured enemies.  You make him tougher so he gets a badarse name, he gets to do what he does best, and you can label him the most dwarvenly of mascots.

actually he already has a name, the "Messianic Brain". yeah. BCs don't even have brains. I think he got is by killing like half of my dogs. also, he picked up a sock, and uses it as a weapon, so he is significantly less effective than a normal colossi

the real problem is using him for something without unleashing him.

also, how far of a drop does it take to kill a bronze colossus?

You should make a tower over it and drop goblinselves into the pond with him.

they don't  have trapavoid, so you can build a room with cages under him, then drop a floor from above, and then you'll have him in a cage and can do much more with him.

magmawiki shows they have this tag: [SWIMS_LEARNED]

i don't know exactly what that means, but I would guess that if he stays in there long enough he'll learn to swim and be able to climb out and continue to terrorize you.

Ponds don't usually have ramps, so there isn't a way for him to get out even if he can swim.

Never seen an alligator jump out of a pond or river just to massacre your dwarves?

I thought that only low skill swimmers needed a ramp or staircase to get out of water?

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Ramp upwards from below to drop him into a room, where the only exit has a cage trap in it. Your miner might escape if he is fast. Put the caged colossus into an arena.

Would building walls around the edge of the pond not prevent him from climbing out?

Socks.  Lots and lots of socks.  It's the greatest Dwarven vice of all, outstripping alcohol by several orders of magnitude: the desire to own and haul as many feet-warming tubes of cloth as possible.

Yeah, but the dwarves would probably keep getting interrupted by him...
