A "Shareable" Map Generator/Editor?
« on: January 24, 2011, 08:33:47 pm »

Hello there, everyone.

I am in the market (without much of a budget, albeit) for a fantasy map generator AND editor. You might have heard of the pen & paper roleplaying game "Dawn of Worlds." Basically, players take turns acting as gods or "fates" and expend points to collaborate or conflict in the creation and development of a fantasy world- much akin to DF's worldgen, but that being the game itself. I'd like to host a session on these forums, but I am finding that drawing and making editions to a map on MS Paint rather crude and tedious, and I don't know where else to look.

What I need is a low budget editor whose files could be shared and altered by others players. On the other hand, a neat tileset or two that I could cut images from and allow players to paste on the sloppy MS Paint atlas would be a good thing as well.

Referrals greatly appreciated!

I suspect emailing/uploading+downloading the files would be more of a pain that just using paint. I know there's numerous free photoshop-ish clones (GIMP comes to mind) that might be marginally better than paint (multiple layers, and such).

In terms of something custom-built for this purpose, I'm afraid I can't help. I suppose Battle for Wesnoth (free TBS) has hex terrain and sprites you might find useful, assuming they're the right size.

Use Subversion or Dropbox perhaps?

You can use google documents or a similar thing to create a spreadsheet, with each cell corresponding to a map tile in the game. Edit the permissions so people can edit the spreadsheet, have a code for what the cells represent, and you're set.

dropbox is broken now. waiting until they fix it.  ::)
plus it rapes my internet. but not others'. odd.

for that I recommend GIMP and sending files through conference "calls" in skype. works like a charm.

Try AutoREALM, totally made for tabletop roleplaying cartography. Pretty powerful, and with a little practice can achieve some good looking stuff  :D

Wow... this is amazingly detailed, but it gave me a seizure when I first opened it.

I think this might be above my learning curve, and a little too advanced for a multiplayer browser game of the uninitiated strangers... but I'll see if I can work this out.

Hey, this is neat!!

Thanks!

A question, however: Is there a way that you know of to alter the height and width of the maps/number of grid units, rather than just changing their size? I can't seem to find anything on it...

Unfortunately, I have yet to master the program. I revealed to you the hill in the distance, but not the path to reach it.

It doesn't even matter that you struck that statement through.

You posted it on a dwarf fortress forum.

Oh AUTORealm. How I wish I had more time to learn your mysteries...
