More Than Just a Game
« on: January 24, 2011, 04:55:37 pm »

So, at work last week, they had just removed an industrial scale, leaving a 12x12x12 foot pit full of concrete, sludge, and water.  They got the bright idea to wash it, not realizing it had nowhere to flow.  They got a small pump but it quickly clogged and simply couldn't handle the volume.  So we needed a way to remove the water that wouldn't be likely to clog.  Everyone was stumped, so I sketched out a crude design for a screw pump and presented it to the president of the company.  We quickly fabricated it and got it going.  It was a lot of work but it did the job, able to transport even fairly large rocks and concrete debris, with no problems about muck and goo.

When asked where I came up with the idea, I explained this was an 'Archimedes Screw' and I got the idea from a game called 'Dwarf Fortress' which I described as a 'reality simulator with working physics'.

Dwarf Fortress:
It saved a company tens of thousands of dollars a day.

So what you're saying is, there needs to be a testimonials section on the main page.

(Seriously, that's awesome though. Kick Toady a few bucks when your dwarven engineering earns you a raise ;) )

Hah, nice.

I know DF's helped me quite a bit when it comes to geology, maths and physics. Despite the fact that DF physics are still far from reality.

In b4 company's factory mass slaughtering kittens for resources.

If Toady someday starts selling dwarf fortress he should definitely implement a testimonials page:

Terry from Ohio: " Thanks, to dwarf fortress I saved my marriage and lost twelve pounds."
