[38b] can't butcher violently killed livestock
« on: March 30, 2008, 03:03:00 pm »

This has been around a while, but I notice it's not on the bugs list.  If a goblin army kills my tame guard cow that isn't anybody's pet, then we are forced to watch her rot in the refuse pile.  An untamed animal could be butchered, and someone's pet could be buried.

It might be a [BUTCHERABLE_NONSTANDARD] creature.  I don't know about cows, but any creature with that tag can't be butured into meat if it wasn't killed by the butcher.

That wouldn't explain why an untamed dead cow (or camel, for me--stupid haunted deserts...) can be butchered after dying a violent death (frequently to its undead counterpart--the zombie camels wanted company?).

Of course, this means that with careless asignment of tasks, my butchers wander out into camel-infested territory to try and grab the corpse, but that's a different issue...

What is a tame guard cow?

Do you have a save with a body?

It is a tame cow.  I put her on a rope out in the wild to trigger ambushes.  Works like a charm.  There are no mods involved other than init.txt and interface.txt

I don't currently have a save with a body.  But it's been mentioned before that unnamed pets -- usually war dogs -- can't be slaughtered if they've been killed (neither can named pets, but at least named pets can be buried), so I'm pretty sure it's consistent.

Edit: By named I mean "named because it's somebody's pet", not "named because it's somebody's killer."

Okay, I'll note it down.  So any work animal or stray tame creature?

Stray tame creature is what I've noticed.  I believe work animals has been mentioned, too, but I don't know as much about that issue.

Edit: to be clear: I *know* that unassigned war dogs can't be butchered or buried.  I don't know about assigned war dogs.
