So, first duty after promotion is to lead the defense of a vital group of factories. Can you geuss how much I like this idea?
I keep my medium fighter from last mission. Megaman gets scout duty. Muwahahaha gets a slow stealth gunship. Char13mange gets a gunship with huge engines. Be happy!
Arriving at the sector, my enthusiasm increases - a lot. There are 2 other squadrons assigned to this location, and a ring of heavy gun emplacements. We are the southernmost squadron, so strike out to the east of the sector in search of the enemy.
CONTACT.
Hopefully this shot shows just how much hardware we have in this sector. That enemy pilot is probably a little suprised. Well, lets take care of this then...
All hell proceeds to break loose as 2 enemy squadrons try some saturation bombing. These seem designed to miss all our fighters and instead head at the factories. This has a minimal effect In this exchange Megaman takes a frontal hit and collides with an enemy light gunship, but comes to no harm thanks to carrying enough speed to get past the enemy.
I get a shot at the gunship Megaman shook hands with. You can also see Muwahahaha trying to shake some long range missiles... he shakes one of them and takes a light hit from the other, whilst avoiding about 3 more heading his way for the next few turns. My shots dont hit the intended target and instead badly damage the gunship moving northwards. Megaman takes 3 more hits and his ship is pretty much fucked.
As you can see, the chaos continues. I have a shot on a light gunship (below and left of centre), if I risk hitting an allied drone. Megaman is the scout to the NW of the image, sensibly keeping out of trouble. Muwahahaha is still taking extreme evasive action off screen (to the east - you can see the vapor trails of the missiles) to avoid the silly number of long range missiles tailing him - one hits him but that should be the end of that particular bit of trouble for now. Char13mange is the slow moving gunship to the north. Both sides are now thoroughly mingled, shots are hard to come by, and our turrets are as much of a hinderance as a help.
Meh - my shot killed that drone. I get another go at killing that gunship though...
The scout about to kill the light gunship (left of image) is Megaman - despite being very badly damaged earlier. Charl3mange can almost be seen shooting at a gunship in the NE of the image.
I land 3 hits and badly damage the gunship. Megaman forces the pilot of his target to eject. Char13mange lands a hit on his target but takes a light one in return. Still no let up in the frantic pace of this action yet, and as I turn to find a target a random missile drops my frontal shields. The light gunship I have been chasing ejects, and I shoot the burning hulk anyway - my missiles do not kill it but it drifts into the range of our turrets, which do. Meanwhile on the other side of the very confusing melee, Mwuhahaha and Char13mange are part of a group of ships encircling a small numner of enemy. One of these flees past me into hyperspace, takes a pot shot at me and drops my starboard shields.
By this point most of the enemy has fled or is in trouble. So to might be Muahahaha (centre of image) who has some evasive action to take... but does so with some skill.
Then as quickly as it all began it is over. The enemy, or what is left of them, hyperspace out. Total contact time is less than 200 seconds. Man that was intense.
Summary:
Enemy attack is smashed. Factories survive. I score a green on green. Megaman lands a kill on a light gunship and wins a second MoH. Granted, our presence wasnt pivotal (most enemy ships seemed to be destoryed by the turrents after they were damaged by us or one of the other 2 squadrons), but we survived a fairly major engagement without loss. Wow.
