I'm been reading about the magma piston for my current fort. It's a great big pillar that you mine out and then drop onto a cistern of magma pumped up a couple z-levels from the magma sea. When you drop the piston, presto! Magma at the top. I'm still sketchy on how to design it, but it seems like great Fun.

What the hell is a magma piston? The fact that it is terrifying intrigues me...

Basically, you collapse a giant slab of rock into a magma reservoir and the magma teleports to the top of the slab.

The basic idea is that you cut out a huge column of rock only supported by a single support. The rock column hangs over a pool of magma that you've siphoned off the magma sea ("the cistern"). Then you break the support and it comes crashing down, which forces the magma in the cistern to "teleport" to the top of the column. With the clever use of hatches in a ring around where the top of the rock column ends up you make it so that the magma can't flow back down. Now your magma pool is at the top.

Exceedingly clever players have even figured out how to use it multiple times by casting obsidian at the top and having a magma safe floodgate at the bottom to shut off the flow so miners can safely re-cut the cistern.

Magma piston is possibly one of the most dwarven creations ever made, with the exception of the Obsidian Fountain.

Basically, when a cave-in hits a liquid, that liquid is displaced.  But, not to the sides.  It's displaced directly upwards.  The magma piston, is when you dig a narrow tunnel down to the magma, then position a large weight above it, by constructing several stone walls, and then cause a cave in that sends the walls plummeting down into the magma, which will then erupt back into the air and shoot out like a volcano.

So far, the only more dwarven thing I've heard of is the Obsidian Fountain, which involves using a magma piston right next to a water piston, and generating obsidian in mid-air!

Sounds like you could build two high-pressure liquid cannons (one water, one magma) and direct them over a hole and make obsidian  which would instantly fall to crush anything beneath it.

[edit: redacted section that incorrectly assumed loose stone and not terrain was created. Loose stones do not kill when they fall, whereas unsupported terrain caves in and does kill.]

As a side note, the stone falling quirk has also been used by enterprising players - setting a catapult high enough and firing away allows you to create a loose stockpile of stone quite far away. Proving once again that hauling stone is only for the uninitiated.

How do I make quantum stockpiles?

Quantum Stockpile -  Assign a garbage dump via the Zone menu (i hotkey) and then mark stuff for dumping by selecting it with (k) and then (d), or use d - b- d to mass-dump.  All items will be dumped on the assigned garbage dump, even if it's 1 square.  You then reclaim any items you want via the stocks menu (under the z hotkey if you have a bookkeeper) or mass-reclaim via d - b - c.

For added effect, make that zone a food stockpile as well, since food rots slower on a stockpile.

I've thought about this many times but never actually figured out a design that works. Screw pumps will only move liquids 1 tile away, where then it drops and spreads randomly. To force the lava/water to spread towards each other will require walls, but then the obsidian will attatch to the walls...
