You could reorganize EVERYTHING! Move piles next to certain workshops and move rooms and whatnot...

Mine out 50z layers in a 30x30 square pattern and then set it up to collapse with a support to create a 50z deep pit. Have your dwarfs quantum the resulting piles of rocks.

It's pretty fun!

Build a fully functioning above-ground village.  Each dwarf's house should have a workshop related to their profession on the main floor, and their personal quarters on the second floor.  In the case of farmers, wall or fence off a section and have that be used as their farm.

How do I make it collapse? I'm really not sure about this.

I wonder if it would be possible to carve out an upside-down pyramid, supported at its tip by a single support.

Build a giant dragon neck and head rising out of the mountains and hovering over your fort's entrance. Have it able to pump magma out of the dragon's mouth onto attackers.

Absolutely. If you do it, build a city on the base of the pyramid (which should be facing the sky), complete with residency, zoos, and especially nobility, then collapse it.

Build an aboveground castle, that's always cool to look at. You'll get a bunch of legendary masons if you make it out of blocks too.

I'm building a replica of Neuschwanstein right now off of the original floorplans. It's a huge project.

Top z: H - channeled; D - Mined; $ - mined out portion with connected support
HHHHH
HDDDH
HD$DH
HDDDH
HHHHH

Zs under that: D - mined out; X - walls
XXXXX
XDDDX
XDDDX
XDDDX
XXXXX

Dig out every layer you want collapsed. Connect the support to a lever. Pull that lever. The support will let go of the flooring it was attached to causing the flooring to smash through each of the mined layers bellow.

I agree that making a pyramid or tower are probably the best early large projects. Build corners first!
Then probably a single waterfall, because it forces you to channel water and make a power source plus pump stack work.
Then probably magma workshops at your main fort level, which will require either a massive pump stack or a magma piston.

Magma pistons downright terrify me.  The simple idea behind this other-worldly invention that, by necessity, WILL lead to Fun, especially if done right.  I'll butcher mer children, hang elves off my wall, dangling by a Restraint, divert a river because it's in the way, but magma pistons terrify me.

Take one of your current forts and expose it to the sky to make it Light Above ground. Dig out every floor if you have to.

Or! More fun, dig around the entire thing so that it is suspended over a huuuuge hole. This works even better if you have 100+Z without magma.

Bonus: have magma at the bottom.

It'll be like twenty years of mining, but it's too cool not to have your entrance over a three mile falling trap.

What the hell is a magma piston? The fact that it is terrifying intrigues me...
