On Very Strange Forgotten Beast Extract-Caused Conditons
« on: January 23, 2011, 02:55:03 am »

Two squads took out four FBs. Now, every single part of their body is swollen and rotten (I'm unable to put up pics as I am somewhat inebriated on sleep deprivation right now, sorry) and every part of their body on the wound screen is white, indicating that they're fine. It's been about a week, all of them are in the hospital, and they're just resting, with nothing really bad happening to them.

Can someone please help explain this? Much appreciated.

(EDIT: Hang on, someone's organs are rotten and they're spewing miasma. Forgot to say they've passed out shortly after killing the FBs and got nauseous before that. I can't clean them because it's winter outside, and since they're my entire military I can't go and fetch water from underground b/c of FB infestations on all three cavern layers. It's been about a week since the fight.)

Scroll down, they've likely all got rotted out spines or stubbed toes.

Otherwise maybe their innards melted and its not visible because their outsides are fine?  My moneys on the first one...

They do. But no one's dying.

EDIT: If they can't breath, they should be dead right?

Get the water for cleaning by carving a fortification into a wall next to a cavern lake. If there's surgery showing on the treatment section there's still hope for your guys as a surgeon can remove the rotten tissue (the higher the skill the better, a low skilled surgeon might just turn serious rot into major rot and take too long so it'll rot back to serious rot right away).
If you're getting tired of trying just save and load, i found the chance of insta-death on load fairly high with syndrome patients.

I've had this happen.

1.  Dwarves Fight and kill FB, but it sprays them with vapor
2.  Initially, nothing happens
3.  Affected dwarves suddenly have their entire bodies start to rot and swell with blood while spewing miasma

Mine died pretty quick though, they didn't even get to make it to the hospital.  I'm going to liken their deaths to that of the man that chose poorly at the end of "The Last Crusade".

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

Yes, I've had FB blood before which disabled the victims' feet, though exactly in what way I'm not sure. They were yellow on the wounds screen.

After being sent to the hospital, they recovered, usually on their own, but never again left the bed. They had no injuries, checking the health section returned nothing, and they simply stayed there till I tried dropping them to reinjure.

They broke their spines when they hit the ground D:

I had the dread yellow feet too--6 hospital beds packed with perfectly happy, healthy dwarves whose feet show up as yellow on the injury screen. Had to put them out of their non-misery.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions :)

Update: they've lost their ability to stand and grasp, every part of their body is afflicted with advanced rot; they're showing up as winded, cannot breath, and no surgery is being prepared for them while they have yellow on non-organ and blue on organs in the wound screen (left hip rotten, brain rotten, etc.) I've traced this to a certain FB extract from one FB (fought 4 at once).

Apparently, the other two (with deadly dust) only KOs, causes nauseous/vomit, and slight fever for about a week, then the symptoms pass. And the inorganic (dendritic agate) has no blood or dust, so he went down without a hitch. Butchering organic FBs returned about 300+ of various organs, meat, etc.

I'm going to savescum and see if upright adamantine spears kill. Like 1000 of them.  8)

(Edit: oh fuck me, they had poisonous gas, vapors, and deadly dust)

yellow feet happen because they step in it with their feet.  Its not a specific foot targeting syndrome.

Spewing miasma, you say? I wonder if they'll suddenly turn aggressive and start biting other dwarves too.

I used an outside program to change the strength, recuperation, and endurance of a bunch of nearly diseased to death dwarves to ridiculously high levels. They now shamble round my fortress praying for death.
