Game Ideas: Your Opinions Wanted
« on: January 23, 2011, 01:08:06 am »

My friends and I are going to develop a game soon, and we plan on selling it through Steam, or our website. We are trying to gauge the popularity of ideas with different groups on the internet. Each of us are posting the game ideas in our respective communities, and I wanted to share our best concept so far with you guys. So here it goes. I will update this thread as our concepts change and we have a better feel of what ideas people like. This was not written by myself, and wasn't even written by the person who was supposed to be in charge of story. To me I visualize it as a Braid/Limbo style game with the level design of Metroid. The story is like a cross between Psychonauts, Lost, and Inception.

"I was thinking a 2d Platformer like Metroid or Castlevania that revolves around traveling through the multi verse while the main character tries to find their way back home to the normal world. This broad idea of the multi verse would allow us to make a ton of different platforming worlds and environments. Later universes could become more personal to the main character's subconscious until the game ended in limbo, things could also become more fantastical as the game progressed deeper into the main character's mind. Game play would include physics puzzles, exploration challenges and upgrades.

The game would include a lot of style and atmosphere and we would try to give it a fairly deep story. The story would not necessarily be linear, and the path you take through the game would depend on the way you handle situations. For example, some puzzles would have more than one solution, and there may be moral decisions that also have an effect on the game.

Here was the story idea I had.

The main character starts off in the real world as a middle age man with paralysis who gets into a coma, and he starts dreaming deeper and deeper. In his dreams life starts normal and he is still crippled, but later as he goes deeper into the multiverse subconscious he begins to walk again, and later starts to gain abilities beyond normal human ability.

When he reaches limbo in the end, he is at his strongest but he has to escape back to the normal world to come out of his coma. Reaching limbo is about 2/3rds of the way into the game, because the last 1/3rd is him escaping from the levels he's already played, only the levels are twisted and disturbed and are starting to fall apart.

An idea for a level:

You go through your childhood starting as an infant at an orphanage and growing up from there. There was a portion of your life where you were mortified of your shadow to a point where you needed hospitalization (just one of those weird phobias I guess). There is a part where you are walking through the hospital you were institutionalized at as a child, and the lighting casts your shadows in different directions. If you turn back to view your shadow, it comes alive and eats you or something resulting in your death. The thing is, is that lighting from different directions casts your shadows in different directions as well. Since you are unable to face your shadow without dying, light direction also limits which direction you can walk. When you are in darkness however you can walk in any direction you choose."

This a rough idea for the story, and so far we only have a basic sidescrolling platformer engine with placeholder graphics. We want the game to be very story centric, so we are waiting until we decide on a story concept before continuing too much.

You had better make the engine for this good. Yesterday I downloaded this game with a weird title without vowels, and it's all about story and poetry, but the engine is miserable. Well, I mostly downloaded it because of the NIN soundtrack, but still.

And you should hook up with Chris Nolan about this idea... Because your concept is bonked from the Inception's side.

We have some really good programmers, and the engine is already really good. The worst part is likely to be the art unfortunately.

See if you can get Fault on this maybe? I'd play a game with his art as the graphics even if it sucked.

Personally, I liked the story with the crippled man. Perhaps he'll also get younger when he goes deeper?

In any case; once it's released, it would be nice to get a heads-up. Bonus cookie points if you release a demo too.

Sounds generic, like it has been done before. You just mention story and a bit of level designs, but story dosn't matter if there is no intresting gameplay.

I'm agreeing with armok, a game can be the most awsome sounding thing and contain the most wonderful levels, but if it isnt fun to play your left with junk.

Common mistake while making an indie game: Either start with new gameplay cencept, or unique story line. What you have is a story concept. Write a story line before you keep going, with development and all that good stuff.

So you guys are saying that regardless of story you would pay 10 bucks for good gameplay? How important would you guys say art is? None of the team members are really able to produce consistent character sprites.

It seems pretty good, even if I'm no game-reviewer/whatever veteran. I do have one peeve with it though. You mention having to escape the levels you have already played, but they are twisted and dark and whatnot. Remember that thing in Super Smash Bro's where you have to do the whole game over again to finish? Or something like that. I only remember having to play through all the same levels again... but anyways, if you DO end up doing this, make the levels significantly different than the original, while retaining a bit of similarity, otherwise it will end up boring.

Your talking on a forum for a game that is a prime example of gameplay over graphics, what does DF have for graphics ASCII, but the gameplay is so open end that it is silly (yeah it gets a little tedious after you setup a functional game, but toadys working on that).

The importance of art is overplayed in modern games, yes I can say that people will enjoy looking at realistic beatiful graphics, but if they play it and its totally generic recycled gameplay they might not to play it after they win.

A successful game is in no way related to a successful game studio, and one doesnt imply the other. Why? A successful game will be something that you will want to keep playing over and over, while a successful game studio will make games that you will buy play once or even twice and then want to buy their next game, any of the game studios that you can name off the top of your head most likely fit this description, with exceptions of greater game ballance (exp Bungie and Halo.).

Anyways as long as you can tell the difference between the character the enviroment and other characters you'll be fine.

I dont think to much can be really said on the game.

The story concept is nebulous. An outline would be neat, to better gauge it.

How can the game have style or atmosphere if you don't have an artist? Style can be conveyed through story elements, and play mechanics, but the visual aspect is still rather strong here.

Metriod and Castlevania are both 2d platforms, but difference genres though. Metriod is an action adventure platformer. Though I'm thinking Super Metriod here. Then you have Castlevania thats an action RPG and none linear to boot. I'm thinking Symphony of the Night here.

Those are two different directions to go into it, and they have their own pros and cons. So, for me, that not telling me anything about the game.

The story crosses, are to bizarre to for me to really ground into anything to judge. Pychsonaughts is a hyper stylized dark comedy. Lost is a science fiction drama thats character driven and linear. I havent seen Inception, so I can't comment on it. So for me, this doesn't tell me anything either.

It sounds like the game hasn't been really fleshed out yet.

There is a saying in cooking: "The first bite is with your eyes"

Technical graphics arn't too too important In my oppinion (I am not sure that is the term) but how the game looks is. Afterall you SEE the game through the art.

While there are exceptions you shouldn't bank on that. Dwarf Fortress gets away with that through a tightnit community and not market appeal. Minecraft gets away with it through strong hype generation and creative control.

Something your game lacks.
