To Shambling Zombie - I think sport hunting is ok as long as long as you remember the animal you hunted. Sort of how prehistoric inuit would take a memento of an animal they killed and remember it at a certain festival.

I thought that if creatures could breed and produce living, fertile offspring, they were generally considered the same species?

IIRC, dogs are generally classed as a very close subspecies of wolf. Humanity hasn't had enough time yet to create an entirely different species from the wolves we began taming thousands of years ago.

A dog can have a fertile child with a wolf.  So they're the same species.

(compare to, say, donkeys and horses, who can produce infertile offspring (mules)).

Mules can occasionally be fertile. It's just unusual, and restricted to female mules, I believe. Of course, my only source for that is this Tvtropes page because I don't feel like actually looking it up.
