Kobolds fighting goblins... goblins fighting goblins?!

I started a new 31.18 game in a mountain/desert biome with no trees, my intention being to turtle up for the first couple years until I had some steel gear and maybe some training to go with.  (Of course, the new ghosts system meant I needed to un-turtle a bit earlier than expected to put merchant ghosts to rest, but that was good and Fun, minus the ghost pathfinding lag.)

While sealed up, I noticed some rather ... odd ... behaviour going on outside.

Firstly, a really strangely high number of ambushes.  Like, there would be times where I would get eight "An ambush!  Curse them!" in a season.

Secondly, the ambush discoveries weren't just merchants or wild animals.  I was having kobolds discovering goblins and vice versa.

Thirdly, the goblins and kobolds were actually fighting each other.  No doubt here – there wasn't anyone else nearby.

And finally, at one point, I actually had what looked like two goblin ambush parties appear at the same side of the map, detect each other, and proceed to attack each other (and promptly scare each other off).  The only remaining goblin was one with a mauled foot.  I checked the combat log, and it did indeed show stuff like the "Goblin Axeman" attacking the "Goblin Maceman" etc etc.

Is this a new feature, a result of having multiple goblin civs at war with each other, or just a really weird glitch?

It's sort of a bug. I don't know about the kobolds attacking the goblins, but if the goblin ambush parties are led by a non-goblin, they'll attack him/her and start a loyalty cascade.

Or if the ambush is lead by a goblin with a skill that isn't reflected in game, such as military tactician.

That must explain why the goblin law-giver died during the siege despite never coming near the fort.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

Some goblin Crossbowmen shot some kobolds thieves escaping my last fortress, so if the civs are at war I guess they do fight.

Yeah, during a siege I had when I just turtled up to wait out the storm a Kobold tried to steal something but the goblins saw him and massacred him. I actually felt bad for the little thing.

I just had a similar experiance. At least the kobold revealed most of the ambushers. All eighty of them.

Poor guy. He actually killed one too; I might just erect a memorial to him.
