Start with 4, 5, and 6, and then end it there, never even mentioning the other three. They do not exist.

Could someone explain to me what makes the original movies so great? Am I going to get skinned for thinking that they were just over-hyped, childish action flicks?
*breaks out the flensing knife*

Really though, it's complicated. Part of it's certainly nostalgia, and cultural inertia or whatever you'd like to call it. Part of it's also that is was good/innovative for its time, which is hard to appreciate now. Everyone knows what a lightsaber is nowadays, so it's hard to be particularly impressed by the fact that they exist. Same with alien-filled cantinas, space armadas, evil empires, talking robots, space wizards, and just about everything else you could possibly like about the movies.

So nowadays, that's not a terrible assertion- there's not a whole lot that hasn't been done better or on par but prettier elsewhere. But, to some extent that's a testament to how good they were, yes?

What Ironyowl is trying to say is... Starwars is cliche because it is what created the cliches that lived on since then because of the success of starwars. It is what started it all.

It is like the Old Hitchcock shows. They are ok now but that is because we copies his psychological techniques so much. At the time there was little to no one who had done what he has done quite as well.

It's not just that, though. It's the way the story is constructed to make sense and the way the films are shot. Plinkett talks about his reviews about how the prequels are shot in a very boring and static way with the blocking of a soap opera. In dialogs it's shot, reverse shot, repeat a few times, then to spice it up a character walks a few paces to a window and turns around. He compares the openings of Ep 1 and Ep 4. See, Ep 4 starts off with that awesome shot of the tiny rebel ship running away from the huge imperial ship. That shot tells you everything you need to know just from the visuals, without a single word of awkward and boring political dialog.
And then you have the gapig plot holes in the prequels that simply don't exist in the OT. The OT makes sense, the characters act logically. Like, why exactly did Qui Gon take a six year old along for the assault on the Naboo palace? And that's not even getting into the horrible, horrible Ep 2 romance.
Seriously, watch Plinkett's reviews.

Seriously, watch Plinkett's reviews.
Plinkett and his reviews is the only thing of value that came from shooting the prequels.

No, the original Starwars had its share of plotholes.

Some patched up in expanded universe but otherwise no.

Well okay, there were some. But none quite as gaping as the prequel trilogy ones. I even hesitate to call them plot holes, the whole thing makes so little sense I'm not even sure what's intentional and what's a hole.

I'd say, watch 5. Watch 6 if you want closure, but with a warning about cuddly teddy bears. The same applies to 1-3, except there's nothing to be gained watching them, other than see things go pew pew and losing every bit of respect you may have towards Darth Vader, and wanna good laugh with Cuisinart Yoda.

I wouldn't watch 4. I mean that Han Solo guy is a pussy, with the not shooting first thing. I mean, what a gasbag. If you do, skip right to the part with them in the Death Star.

Ah yes, that must be it. For the people born in the 80's the world was already filled with movies that did this. (And half of the aliens were trying to destroy humankind, if it wasn't for the President of the United States of America to stop them!!!) :P

I think Hitchcock movies are still great and thrilling compared to most horror/thriller movies today. And that, I believe, is because they replaced the thrill with blood and gore. Showing everything in detail is not really the best way to go...

New plan: Watch 4 to 6, then read this.
I second this.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

My constant assertion has been to go with: 4, 1, 5, 2, 3, 6.

But everyone else thinks that's just madness.

Watch the original trilogy first.

Dang it if your going to keep bringing up the rejects then I am going to have to force you to watch... EVER SINGLE MOVIE FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD!!!

Trust me... While that period of time saw some of the best movies... a lot of them were "roll around on the floor in pain" terrible.

There are good movies left in the world. I am not aware of a great movie that was released recently (Maybe Shrek), but they exist somewhere...

Oh, another reason to like the original trilogy: 2:15-2:21, one of the most representative hero-villain exchanges ever.
