New plan: Watch 4 to 6, then read this.
Oh no. I think I'm going to lose a lot of time on these.

...

No need to think, I got distracted reading them before managing to hit the post button.

The kitchenette mold free, you move on to the pantry. it's nasty in there. The bacon is grazing on the lettuce. The ham is having an illicit affair with the prime rib, The potatoes see all, know all. A rat in boxer shorts smoking a foul smelling cigar is banging on a cabinet shouting about rent money.

Id suggest 1, 2, and 3 first... but the problem is that the technology difference and action difference may be enough to convince him that 4, 5, and 6 are bad movies.

You pretty much have to show the person 4, 5, and 6 first because it is the best way to showcase them to someone who isn't a film buff.

This requires having rolled 1 at least once, and this is far more times than necessary.

4, 5, 6 to start. Other than the massive technology and cinematography gap....do you really want to make their first experience with the Star Wars universe include Jar-Jar? Do you? Because that would just a be a dick move.

My honest advice is to watch 456 first, then go for 123, then top it up with RedLetterMedia's reviews of the latter.
This.
New plan: Watch 4 to 6, then read this.
This.
Start with 4, 5, and 6, and then end it there, never even mentioning the other three. They do not exist.
Or simply, this.

Could someone explain to me what makes the original movies so great? Am I going to get skinned for thinking that they were just over-hyped, childish action flicks?

For the most part your right, they are fueled by Nostalgia.

Basically for the time they were amazing movies with graphics so futuristic that it makes Avatar look like it was coded in a gameboy by comparison.

The story is a bit standard, the themes good, the acting horrible, the action quite bad, the atmosphere great, good imagination.

In my oppinion they are alright movies but people kinda hyped them up to insane levels. I am also ENTIRELY willing to say that I am likely Chronologically biased.

They were nothing groundbreaking, but they didn't do anything terribly wrong. It's an ideal Sci-fi blockbuster movie.

Not to mention the ship models look 1000x better than the CG ships.

It's not so much that they were great in every respect, it's more the contrast between the fairly okay original trilogy and the utterly horrible prequels. I can't explain why the OT was good, simply because I'm not a movie expert. Mr. Plinkett, however, can explain at length why the prequels are so bad: http://www.redlettermedia.com/phantom_menace.html He does bring up quite a lot of good points about the OT in the process, too.
