Yeah, if there's death, they split.  It doesn't tell you though, and it probably should.

I'll see what I can figure out about merchant timing in general.

Had this happen to my fortress just now. A large human caravan arrived (8 wagons, 8 mules) and just when the last wagon has finally made it to the trade depot they leave.

It sounds like what we really need are double-wide roads (or just two seperate roads), so they can arrive two at a time.

What really seems to hold them up is swordsmen loitering in the middle of the road.  Some sort of "stay off the road" order for human bodyguards would really speed things up.

I noticed if my military is standing in the road, they just stand around and wait patiently for him to move. Maybe a gentle "we'd like to pass, kind sir" type message. It took me a couple minutes to notice the whole train had stopped moving.

The first year I got my road up and working, the human caravan arrived at the same time as the goblin siege. They massacred each other, a couple human wagons survived and scurried off the map, and I got mad loot.

I've seen this before too.  They didn't quite leave, before unloading.  However, I did get the message "The merchants are about to leave" before they'd even finished unpacking.

I just had this bug happen to me.

I had two trade depots, and a dwarven caravan came.

The ones with wagons just stopped at the outer depot, while the other dwarves with camels stopped at the inner one.

I couldn't trade with either, after a message of 'Sorry, we're still unloading" they just left after a minute, without even a warning or anything.
For some reason they did seem to leave some wood and some filled bins behind,
which got happily carried away by my dwarves.

While I appreciate the free goods, the traders took all the stuff I was actually hoping for away again.
The total time they have been in my area hasn't been over 2 minutes.

While they were leaving they randomly dumped some more goods of their wagon halfway through (2 cloth bins), leaving a small trail behind.

Perhaps the weirdest thing is that I have a 'Glumprong Wagon' showing up as deceased in my unit list now, but there is no sign of it, and I've seen them leave the map intact.

Using version 38c, and I have a save file a few days before it happened.
Not entirely sure wether it will reproduce, but I'm figuring the bug lies in having two trade depots.

Yeah, try just having one trade depot, and see if that prevents it. I get similar problems when I have two trade depots, too. As it says in the bugs list,

quote:
000226 □ [dwarf mode][trade]   having two depots confuses the human traders

You said it was a dwarven caravan in your case, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same cause. By the way, did you notice this thread is from about a year and a half ago?

I did, but I didn't feel like opening a new thread for something that has already been discussed before. ^^;

I think it's a similiar bug, yes, but I figured pointing out my take might help, since some new effects appeared for me, and they were dwarves and everything.

Also, since they dropped goods around for free, this might be used as a way of cheating. Though I guess it's not thát helpful, and if anyone wanted to cheat there'd be more easy and worthwhile options available.

Mostly it just annoyed me because I was really looking forward to trading that autumn. xD

I don't know how I overlooked this in the existing bug list though. I did a search and everything. x.x

As I understand it, traders don't really care how you get their items, whether it's by trading or seizing or using dump tricks or whatever; they just look at the value of what they had when they came in vs. the value of what they had when they left, and if they don't like what they see, then they'll get angry.

I just wish I knew if seizing had any other negative effects, since I'd love to be able to offer them, say, a lump of claystone, and then seize it back to get them to leave early.

I don't think you can seize offered goods, but yes, trade it to them (while they still make more than the rock's value) and then sieze it back.

Beyond that, I don't know if siezing has more or less effect than just tearing down the depot (goods value not withstanding).

Next time, please open the new thread and add a link to this one if you like.  If people (especially Toady One) don't notice the dates and just start reading, they're wasting their time on an issue that's months out of date.

And lest you think this meaningless rambling from a newbie, let me quote  a thread in the Dwarf Mode forum:

Gah! So sorry.

I'm very new to the forum and you can't expect me to have read every thread. I haven't even been to the dwarf mode section yet. x.x

I really didn't want to annoy anyone, and I really did look around for a 'forum rules' section. Just wanted to help by reporting a bug, and since I also noticed people getting annoyed by others starting topics when they were already (partly) discussed, I did my best to actually DIG UP this topic and add my version of the story.
Sorry that it backfired.

Thanks for the warning though, it won't happen again.

I'll let this thread die in peace now.

You mean like these rules at the top of the board?

Please consult The List of Reported Bugs and search this sub-forum before posting.

When reporting a bug, include the version number and make sure the thread title is relevant to the issue you are describing.

Thanks for helping to improve DF for everybody.

Emphasis on The List of Reported Bugs.  Where your bug was found.

Enough, enough.  Newbies need to be shown the One True Path, not fed to the hydra.

Although, given DF, I'm not sure the One True Path is any safer...
