Human trader caravan leaves before it arrives
« on: August 22, 2006, 07:05:00 am »

I've seen this mentioned somewhere else, I think, but now there's a nice shiny new bug report forum I'll... report it.

A large human trade caravan arrived at my fortress (one with carts using the road), moving very slowly. I got the message that they were about to leave when they were still unloading, so I sat on the trade depot spamming the trade command. It went straight from 'Sorry, we're still unloading' to 'No traders here' and off they went, after a very long time *re*loading that made me suspect that they were stuck (they got moving eventually).

Did I just ask them for too much beer? :P

I had this happen, too, and I think I know why (for my cas, at least).

Do you have two trade depots? In my case, I did, and the caravans split up. They would never finish unloading. But when I demonished the indoor one, they only had one to go to, and unloaded as normal.

No, I had just the one trade depot, outside. It was almost as if they had too much stuff to manage.

They shouldn't ever fill up beyond their capacity.  Were any of them late to arrive at the depot?  Sometimes there's a mule straggling or something that messes up the whole operation.

I was actually thinking about this the other day - maybe the timer for leaving should start once they have actually unloaded? With exceptions for when you don't have a depot, they could still give you time to build one, but the clock would be running.

There weren't any stragglers and the route was save from critters, but the caravans were moving extremely slowly as they queued up to shuffle into the depot. They also took a very long time to move out - the mules had left the map before I saw the caravans move.

I had a human caravan arrive in early summer with five or six very slow wagons that didn't completely finish unloading until about thirty seconds before I got the message that they were preparing to leave.

One has to question the logistics of using horses that take several months to travel a few hundred yards.

Couldn't we just have goods available as they come rather than the "We're unpacking right now" message? Or perhaps an option for a bigger depot?

What I can't understand is why the multi-horse wagons are so much slower than a guy with a mule.

Who taught them to use horses for wagons anyway? They should get oxen instead. Horses just don't have enough strength to pull a wagon full of delicious raccoon rations.

This same exact thing happened to me, there weren't any wagons straggling behind or anything, they just take way way way too long to unload.

Could you please give them more time to trade, or make them unload faster if they have many many goods?

Same problem here, 3 years in a row now.  At most they encounter a fox or deer on the way and dispatch it handily.  Then they get to the depot and unload for a looooooong time.  Get the "we're leaving soon" message, and try *very* frequently to trade, but still unloading.  Then they leave  :(

I'm not sure what happened, but the merchants are leaving before they got to the depot. At least one of them died, and I suspect that to be the reason.

5 wagons and some mules arrived just moments after I got a message about kobold thieves. For some reason I could see a thief from the very far end of the wilderness. It might have something to do with the caravan guards if they were already there. I've also noticed thieves and caravans arriving at the same time earlier as well.

My soldiers killed three or so thieves, and the merchants and their guards were at the depot at the same time, probably unloading the goods. I didn't need them, really, but I really wanted to have e.g. leather and meat, and any breeding animals they had (I had ordered some). I didn't try trading, but I could order dwarves to bring items to the depot.

Then I noticed that the merchants were leaving. Nothing much happened. One of them died, at least, as there are two bins in the ground - but I don't know who, or how. There's no message about it. I scrolled the whole 'a' from the moment Merchants started unloading their goods, but found nothing relevant.

At the very least, I should have gotten a message and an explanation. Also, it'd have been nice if the caravan hadn't started leaving while the Trade Baroness was still dealing with my dwarves. I'm not sure how they expect her to get home.
